Hey, just got done trying to oc a buddies pc, (no luck) heres the poop:
mobo P6B40-A4X rev1:1 (who makes???)
celeron 633 (want to go to 950)
generic slot1 adapter,

I can get it past the win98 splash screen to the blue screen of death , fatal OE etc. etc.
my question whats the safe max voltage for this chip i went to 1.85 but wasnt sure about 1.9. the chip and fan is Intel retail. How about a resonable temp?
anybody out there with the same chip? what do you think. Could it be the mobo?? Heres something everytime i increased the voltage by .05 i got a little farther in bootup. Didnt want to screw this up so i stopped...did i wus out to soon? thanks eveyone.

You went straight to 100 MHz FSB without any additional cooling? You need to take it a step at a time and then check temps and test for stability before proceeding. Yes, without additional cooling, you should not go any farther with the voltage. With a good CPU cooler and good thermal paste and maybe an extra case fan or two, then you can try 1.9v.

the chip itself never got over 100F when running at 1.85v. (granted it never got up and running) also win98 showed OE errors, etc so i was leaning more to a cpu/mobo error rather than a heat related error. (it never locked up) The fan/heatsink that came with the cpu is retail and looks beefy enough. In the past i thought the retail fans were adequate. You might be right about the fan. what i need is an average of the temp. for this cpu so i know what to expect. is 100F already to hot?

You need to report temps in C. here on this international forum. Well, 100 degrees F. is about 38 degrees C., so yeah, that's getting pretty warm especially since you haven't even loaded (stressed) the CPU yet. My system runs about 38-40 degrees under intense 3D games with all the cooling mods I've done, so I'd say heat is probably a big factor. Retail HSF don't cut overclocking at all. You need better cooling. Are you using a good thermal paste or are you using that crappy worthless thermal tape?

On the other hand, sometimes a BSOD is memory problems. If the RAM won't run at that speed, you might get the BSOD. What speed and kind of RAM is being used? What memory timing BIOS settings are you trying? Is it possible to swap better RAM into the system and then try it? If all the RAM slots are full, try removing one stick and leaving an empty DIMM slot. Will the system run okay at 75 MHz FSB? If so, what are the CPU load temps? Good luck.

great thats what i needed to know Batboy, was the temp. The memory is pc100 and 133 but i dont know the brand. I was running at 100FSB. I will DL a fsb software selector since my slokit and mobo only does 66/100. I'll play with the memory and test. Any personal choices for a cpu cooler.....cost effective is the operative word here. the cpu was only 40 bucks.
thanks for you input.

The Alpha PEP66T is designed for a slocket application. I've had one on my C600 ( @ 1026). My LOAD temps don't go over 35C. This is using a Delta 38cfm "hair drier" for a fan.

I recently got a Millennium Glaciator. I've actually got this mounted on the slocket right now. This puppy is big, heavy, 100 % copper, and a bit expensive. But it cools the Celeron within a degree or two of the Alpha, and is tons quieter. It's also physically smaller (though much heavier) than the Alpha, so if room on your motherboard is a concern, you might want to look at one of these.

GlobalWin makes some good hsf's for this type of application, as well.
