View Full Version : I dont think this is good, any help?
Ok, first ill apologize if this is a stupid question but i dont have much experience working on pc's. Ok, basically my friends computer was in storage for awhile, and when he went to boot it up today, it could not read the hard drive. So i checked all of the connections to the board from the HD, and checked the power connection. Those all looked good, i had read that if the comp had been jarred in any way it could mess up the disks on the HD, is this possible? And if thats the case, is the only fix to replace the Hard drive? I cant go to the C:\ because it says its an invalid drive name and it doesnt locate the drive, please help if possible
Shock is not really very good for drives, but modern HDs can take a pretty good jolt when not running and still be OK.
Try this:
Listen for the drive spinning up when you power on. No sound? No power. Try a different connector from your PSU. Still no sound? try the connector on a CDROM or other moex-powered device such as a fan. Power at the connector, but not spinning up? dead drive or corroded connectors on the drive istelf.
Spinning up? Go into the bios and see if the drive shows up when you run an auto-detect drives.
No autodetect? dead drive. Autodetect? OK. Save the settings for the drive in the bios and boot windows.
Chances are that the cmos battery died while in storage and you lost your drive settings in the bios. If your bios settings don't "stick" after powering down, replace the battery.
Good Luck

yes if the computer was knocked hard when the hard drive was spinning it could distroy it. and yes the only easy/cheap way would be to buy a new one
nice, ty for the quick replies, the drive spins when starting up, so i guess ill check out the BIOS next, either way i appreciate the responses
does not read the hdd, meaning that it couldn't boot into windows?
right, it wouldnt boot. goes through most of POST, then hangs up a bit and says it didnt find a hard drive.
