View Full Version : [SOLVED] 486SX 25 MHz
I have an AST Bravo 4/25s computer, with a 486SX 25MHz build-in (put directly onto the MoBo, no slot, no socket). I would like to overclock this processor (not too much, don't want to fry the chip !), to about 33 MHz. I would like to know how to overclock it (it will be my first time).
Thanks
The easiest thing to do is to remove the whole motherboard and throw it away. Then replace it with a newer more powerful motherboard and CPU combo. That thing is a worthless antique. I hope that does not offend you if this is really not a joke post. I have old stuff like that given to me all the time now. I strip off salvageable stuff and junk the rest. I recently acquired the remains of a compter box that contains a socket 5 motherboard and AMD 133 MHz processor. A buddy of mine has first dibs on this combo, but I think we finally got his Cyrix 233 machine stable, so chances are good that he doesn't wnat it. Email me if you're interested and if you live in the U.S.. This would fit right into your case and would be 5 times faster than what you currently have. The overclocking guidelines section at tomshardware.com has some info in their achives about overclocking that obsolete stuff. Maybe check there. Good luck.
Don't overclock it.
I had one of those. Put some termal grease and a Pentium heatsink on it, pushed to 33MHz and it fried right on my face. Lucky mine was socketed, so I bought a DX-33 and replaced it.
Since you have no socket, fry it and goodbye Mr. Relic. My advice : strip the mobo off and guard it safely somewhere. It may be worth something in the future, and if it doesn't at least you will have something to show to your sons and grandsons.
If you are willing to try, the AMD 586 133 can overclock to 160 (4x40MHz) with no voltage rise. But the best performance would be setting it as a DX4 (3x multiplier) and 50Mhz. That gives you a "stunningly fast" 150MHz, with "incredible" 50Mhz FSB.
Well, that was quite incredible back in the 486 years.

Believe me, you didn't miss a damn thing.
486 was slow even when it was fast. Be grateful you never have to wait 70 minutes for a windows install that may not even work.
Wouldn't it be just easier to just let the old 486 in his AST, and just build a new computer with the AMD 586 ?
Both Pinky and alex are right IMO.
Though it really was fun overclocking my AMD 5x86 + M919 Mobo ... ;D
