One of the guys at work has a PIII 850 retail slot 1 processor he wants to sell me for $100, it's a cB0. I'm gonna get it tommorow and take it for a test drive. What criteria do ya'll think I should use in my decision to buy??

Thanks guys,

I would double-check the price against pricewatch, but it seems like an OK deal to me. The 850 is not known for its overclocking prowess but it is a good CPU nonetheless. I put one in a computer for my dad.

Hey Thanx for the reply, I wish I could get some more input!! I had it at 1003 for like 20mins then I got a prime95 error. Thats with stock hsf. Also with stock setup I had like 50C temp @1.9V, but that could be fixed with an Alpha P3125.. or a modified PEP66 that I have plans for.....if I would get some INPUT!!!!! My specs are in my sig, but it has my 700 is in it!! Come on guys gimmie some info PLEASE!!! So I can make a decision??

If you want to buy it for serious overclocking a cB0 stepping is not a good choice and slot type cpu's leave little for motherboard choices as you know.
If you want to buy it for what it is then go for it.

Thanks Placid!
I'm trying to get opinions on what criteria I should look for in my decision. Like if it can get to ????mhz w/stockhsf @ ?.?V with ??C temp it should OC good with a better heatsink.. I cant gamble too much with my loot, got a wife and child (in the military=poor slave), ya now?? Wel I'm just tring to make the best of the deal at hand. If you wouldn't do it tell me.... I wish it was Flip chip though......Thanks!!!!

Going from a 700 to a 850 is not that much of a improvement and most would rather have the 700.
You get alot of performance from a higher fsb. Since you already have your 700 at 128 then you would have to get the 850 to 1088 to get the same fsb.
Look in the cpu database for 850's that are SL47M or SL43F and see how high other's have gotten with air cooling.
You already have a good heatsink for your cpu unless you can sell your current cpu and heatsink and get back most of the cost I wouldnt do it if money was tight but thats just me.

Lots of better deals for $100, in my opinion.

The smart money says stick with the 700 for now. A new mobo is in your future. Have you seen the great prices on T-birds? Whether you stick with Intel or jump to AMD, a new board will be in order soon. However if, like me you rarely get the chance to spend any computer money, and you get a chance to test drive the 850 on your board, see how high you can get it stable, run some benchmarks and compare to the 700. If the 850 surpasses the 700 by a good bit, jump on it. P3 850's are $135 on pricewatch at the present. Check the CPU database like Placid said for an idea of what you MIGHT acheive. My SL3xx cB0 700 is an under achiever.

I have to agree with batboy on that, I paid 60 for my celly 600, And I think it will beat a pIII 850.

I'm not gonna buy this chip, it sucks!! I'm looking at the the cD0's now..... Twice as much but alot better!!!!
