I am trying to get a good gaming PC, but I don't plan on overclocking...much, seeing as I have never done it before, I might try a 10% overclock or something, just so I get some experience with the whole deal, but anyways-

My system specs are going to be this:
-Asus P4P800 motherboard
-P4c 2.8 GHz processor
-TWINX1024-3200C2 RAM (Corsair PC3200) /OR/ TWINX512-3200C2 RAM (Corsair PC3200)
-ATI Radeon 9800PRO video card
-5 intake fans, 2 back, 2 front, 1 side
-1 top exhaust fan
-48x CD RW drive
-52x Combo CD RW, DVD RW drive
-Floppy
-60 GB HD 2MB buffer

This is my first time ever even attempting to build a computer.. Think it will work? Should I substitute any of the parts for something different?

Currently I am running a system that would suck tail compared to this. :)

Sounds like a winner to me.
I think most people use the two rear fans as exhausts (I do)
Have you looked for heatsinks? (an absolute must).
I'd also suggest a better hard drive (8mb cache)
Even better: a pair of 80GB Maxtor SATA drives (i think the P4P800 supports SATA) in raid 0.
and a sound card... will make a big difference in framerates!
you could try and audigy2 zs, or if that puts your budget a bit too high, even a SB Live! will make a difference.
Oh, and get rid of that floppy ;)

Personally, I'd go AMD, but that's your choice.

It will indeed work, and all the above ^^ upgrades are reccomended, though you can definitely hold off on the the SATA RAID, especially if it pushes thine budget.

Also, I'd consider 3 intakes (front and side) and 3 exhaust fans (rear and top).

Generally, you want air to move from front to back and bottom (side) to top.

Good luck!

i agree, better hds, sound cards, and make the rear fans exhaust, whew everyone here has the same advice :p.... except, if you don't want to oc much, then the stock heatsink is perfectly fine and you can put the money somewhere else and i would keep the floppy, for emergency services, and since im in school, i need it to bring documents back and forth

Thanks for the tips, I am already pushing the budget, but I have $300 and am getting the rest from birthday money that is coming up here soon :D

But anyways, the floppy drive is a must, I use it for transfering things back and forth to school, especially when the printer runs out of ink and such. I have a free copy of Windows 2000 Pro too, woohoo. lol

I might try a 10% overclock or something

:D Sure thats what they all say.........

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!

...and the sickenss

Personally I would suggest that you pick up some PC4000 instead of 3200. You will thank yourself for it later on.

Okay, lets kill the floppies!!!!!!
get a 128MB usb pen/jump drive... they're faster too. (especially if you're just printing off a file at school. (BTW, email with an attatchment works too).
I got my 128MB USB drive for 20bucks at officemax.

j/k... even I needed a floppy when I tried to install win xp on my friends system... the RAID drivers were on a floppy! Floppies aren't dead, but lets TRY and kill them. Honestly, I saw the same model floppy for sale a couple weeks ago that was in the old Wang Exec (x386) laying around.

Opt for the 8mb cache HD, it really does make a difference (I think that means it is also 7200RPM... but who'd get a 5400 if they plan to game?) and it doesn't cost much more... $5-$10?

Try getting a Western Digital SE drive, either 80 Gig or 120 Gig. Has 8mb cache and a 3 year warranty :)
