View Full Version : cB0 P3 700E can't do 133FSB in 3d
I'm stuck at 910 MHz. Idle temp 32-33C Load 43C, Room temp 24C, system temp 25C Running SiSoft Sandra Burn-in Wizard. I have a 120mm intake, a side mounted 92mm intake, Exhausting are a 92mm below PSU,80mm PSU fan and a slot cooler. I didn't have a 60mm fan, so I have an 80mm on my Thermalright SK6. It sounds like an airport. I don't understand how the system can be so stable with the PCI bus running at 43MHz. (130/130/43) But will not run 3d games at 133/133/33. I have a Voodoo 3 2000. One starnge thing is, the HSF pivots on the cpu very easily. I have reinstalled and lapped the heatsink several times. I'm very sure the heatsink is flat, I checked it on a piece of glass and with a straight edge. When I examine the contact points on the sink and the cpu, the Arctic Silver is pushed to the sides and the center is bare of compound. Is it possible that the chip itself is not flat? Also a small "crack or gouge" has appeared on the chip. I'm afraid to keep reinstalling for fear of deepening the crack. Iv'e been trying to sneak up on 133 FSB 1 or 2 MHZ at a time. Burning in at each increase. I had to increase the Vcore to 1.95 to stabilize the system after passing 125MHZ.
I know you will see this Mr B. I'm glad your'e getting a 700 FCPGA. As to the race to a gig, you'll probably pass me within an hour of installation. Did you order a new mobo too. I thought all yours were slot 1's?
I just bumped it up to 131 FSB (917 MHz). I'll run F@h tonight and try a 3d game tomorrow evening.
I'm wondering, Slake, if all of the lapping on that 'sink has removed enough material to necessitate a very slight tweak to the hsf's clip, so it sits a bit more snug to the chip. That's a tough call, though, as it's way too easy to bend that clip too much, and make the situation far worse.
Yes, all of my boards are slot 1. If I can't locate one locally, I'll pull the Celeron 600 out of the Soltek slotket and use that. I'd rather leave it in there, and just get another one, though. Thing is, there's only ONE place around me locally that sells stuff like this, and all they carry for slotkets is the Abit !!!, which I've read too many bad things about to even consider buying.
The guy I'm getting the 700E from said he had it to 933, until it got too hot in his apartment, and he had to back off to 800 or so. He didn't say what he ran for vcore, or a hsf. A slotket will allow me any vcore setting I want, and for cooling, I now have a choice between the PEP66T, and a Millennium Glaciator.
Hope you can get that puppy stable. 133 and the bus is in spec again. That load temp seems a bit high for my liking...can't help but wonder if that's got something to do with it.....
Mr B
BTW...Don't lap the chip!! ??? ???

You know, I had a problem with my cbo 700 not being flat, so what did I do??????
I lapped that bad boy with some 600 grit sand paper! actually i WET sanded it using some alcohol. didn't take much off, just the blue!
I followed that up by lapping my 566 the same way and saw a small temp reduction of 1-2 degrees c, but better stability due to the hsf having better contact with the core! I'm now able to run my 700 at 933 with a v core of 1.85 where before I lapped it I had to run it at 1.9. This chip sits on a abit slocket III 1st edition, however I've heard enough that I'm looking for a MSI or Soltek now so maybe I can drop the vcore and thus the temps!
What I will say is lapping a flip chip is something to think about, you must not use great pressure or work it to much, a wee bit at a time is the only way to do it if you decide to go that route!
Lap at your own risk.
Oh, by the way it's prolly your voodoo keeping you from running 3d due to the agp being out of spec, have you checked the agp divisor? is it at 1/4 or 1/3?
Also, Mr. B let us know how that 700 turns out as I know you will.
Thanks zPacKRat and Mr B. The video card is PCI not AGP, but may be the limiting factor anyway. I just don't see how it can run at 43MHz PCI bus with 131FSB but not with 133? Even tried running with the PC 133 memory at 100MHz cas 3. I have mixed feelings on learning that others (at least one) have had un-flat chips.
And Mr B you'll never believe this but ...ahh..errr. ahem, I DID lap the chip just a wee little bit prior to starting this thread. I was ashamed to admit it after murdering my Celeron 600. I don't think adding a tad of bend to the clip will help. When installing I pushed the clip down past the lug and with my free hand I tested the "seating" ofn the heatsink. Loosey goosey still.I think I may be maxed out on this chip. I am gonna lap the Heatsink One Mo Time tomorrow. I'm going to leave the CPU alone though. That crack scares the crap outta me. I was doing some heavy duty praying when I lapped it. I am also removing that pretty gold plated heatsink from the Northbridge and putting a small 486/pentium HSF on it. After that if it doesn't look like it has a shot at the gig-jig, I'm seriously considering selling the chip and mobo and jumping over to AMD. I saw a couple of sweet deals in the OC.com classifieds.
