hey, im at university and due to medical problems my uni have agreed to buy me 2 new computers (one desktop and one laptop). The laptop withouta doubt is gonna be a top o the range centrino cos i need the battery life to use it in lectures. The only pentium iv ever owned was a really crappy p3 1ghz, so iv no idea how to OC a p4 and which chip will be best....
so my question is (but be sensable, they aint gonna pay out for extreme editions here so dont even suggest it) - what is the best p4 chip and OC'ing motherboard that I should ask for? For overclocking on air with an sp94 and using my custom mounted delta 120mm (190cfm)?

iv read the poll thread and im thinking a p4 2.8C and an Abit IC7 Max3, what do you think? i dont wana ask for a 2.8c or whatever and get a chip i cant OC very well.....im hoping to hit around 3.6ghz - so feedback is needed soon!! iv gotta tell em what i want. I dont think i wana prescott cos of the heat - especially when i wanna go high on air. Should i just get the fastest stock chip (ie 3.4c) and not OC? - id rather not have to do this.
Thanks

apart from cpu and mobo, all other components will be as in my sig (unless uni will get me an ati 9800xt). So memory and stuff will be the same as below.

The 2.8C is a great overclocker and a good bargain. Perhaps hoping for 3.6 gig might be a little optimistic, but certainly with SP-94 cooling, 3.4 to 3.5 gig should be within grasp. An exceptional CPU (like the SL6Z5 might go 3.5 to 3.6 gig but don't hold your breath). Your RAM should handle 3.6 gig using the 5:4 memory ratio too. The Abit IC7 Max 3 and Asus P4C800 Deluxe are the two best mobos available. Both have their pros and cons, but I lean towards Abit as a personal preference.

would a 3.06c or 3.2c hit 3.6ghz air but at a lower fsb? which is most important? fsb or overall clock speed? will a 2.8c at 3.4/5 out perform (for eg) a 3.2@ 3.6? iv never OC'd a pentium before

Well from whats being said personally the 2.8C with the Abit-Max3 is the way to go.

Gives you a nice high end machine with probley little work. As for FSB the higher you get it the better, then again if you are trading FSB for Mhz then its not worth it. Mhz counts more in Intel CPU's for sure over the ram portion.

I own an Abit IC7-G... It is the best Mobo I have ever had the pleasure of knowing (I could not afford the Max3)

Abit has blown me away with the level of care and craftsmanship they put into their product. from the packaging to the Bios, First class all the way.

Go Abit.
