View Full Version : Running a P2 with a half HS?

I have this old P2 266@300MHz. For a long time ago I sawed a 1/3 of the HS. My question is, can I use this HS on the P2 again, or would that fry the thing? I have thought about putting some AS2 and a bigger fan on, would that help?

Thanks

Can you submit a pic of that heatsink? You've totally confused me.

Hmm, you sawed off 1/3 of the STOCK cooler? Maybe it would work... with a bigger fan...

Try using it, and keep a close eye on those temps! Thats what I would do.

I would do it. Worst case scenario you have to pay 10 bucks for a new one.

I've booted with the Celeron in the sig at default with NO heatsink.

Sorry about the confusion.... I'll se if I can do it better:
I don't have a pic of the HS, but it's a stock P2 HS which I removed 1/3 from. My question is: Can I still use the HS, even though it's missing 1/3?

Yep it's a stock HS. Unfortunately I can't measure me temps on this old thing.

The big thing is "Have you taken the case off the CPU?"

If you have taken the case off the CPU, then 1/3 of a heatsink may be a problem. There are smaller chips off to the sides of the CPU that touched the case for cooling, this heat was then transferred to the heatsink...the part you cut off.

The enormous things is the fact that you can't monitor temps. You could say the heck with it and mount that heatsink. And if it doesn't work you're not going to know it until it is too late. You'll fry your chip?

Is it worth it? If not, go buy a new heatsink.

ONLY $10! WOW! Getting a Pentium 133 costs about $13... I REALLY gotta upgrade this Pentium 90....

About the 1/3 deal... Get some kind of digital thermometer that gets the temp with a thermocouple. It should work. I could tell you how to make a thermocouple if I could remember how....
