I cannot overclock my celeron 566 at all, not even to a fsb of 75... wtf is going on. I heard that people have successfully overclocked these to 850, yet i cant even get it to go to 650, without crashing in 3d games.

Its not the my gfx card, becoz i overclocked it to 100/33 at first, which doesnt overclock the pci/agp bus at all. i cant even overclock it one step up. Its also definelty not overheating, it is room temp to touch even after overclock. The cpu has a stock cooler on it, but like i said it wasnt even hot, and i had a huge fan on the whole comp with the case off just to see if it was overheating... it wasnt but i still get crashes in 3d games, even if the pci bus speed is running at the default 33, when i overclock it one step up it only is at 37, thats safe rigth? but even when i tried to overclock to 100/33, the cpu was heatsink was cool, but still itw as crashing..... sigh wtf is going on :(

Intel Celeron 566 (66*8.5, Stock fan)
Nvidia GeForce 2 MX (crappy heatsink)
VIA Apollo Pro 133 Motherboard (not 133a)
Windoze 98SE, lastest official det drivers...
Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128
Lucent 56k modem

What motherboard do you have. I see it's an Apollo, but who made the board?

Ok well what are your temps? Do you have a new bios update? From what I see maybe its your heatsink.I have a C / 533@600 right now and I am waiting on my C // 633mhz. I have a Volcano /// on my C /. I wouldn't use anything less than that to overclock

The first Apollos arent great, but definately should be able to do that.

Make sure there is contact between the heatsink and chip. It may seem cool because it isnt taking the heat off of the chip. Use thermal paste also.

I've never seen a coppermine Celeron that won't do at least 75 MHz FSB. Better get better CPU cooling. Just because the heatsink don't feel warm don't mean the CPU isn't hot. In fact, I'd be a little concerned that it wasn't a little warm. Could mean there is not much thermal transfer going on.

sounds to me it may be your ram. i had a similar problem when i couldnt get my celeron 566@850. found out one of my dimms was generic 128, so i tossed it. i kept my two kingston sticks. ive been running at 850 now, with 1.75v. works great.

Doesn't the pci/agp speed have to stay near 33mhz?
Maybe another card is causing problems......

Hey Spazzed, the closer to spec you run the PCI and the AGP, the less problems you'll have, that is correct. But, the normal AGP bus is 66 MHz not 33 MHz. However, normal PCI bus speed is indeed 33 MHz. I run my PCI bus at 38 all the time. If you have good quality components, this can be done ok.

BadXX has a point about the RAM. Cheap generic memory just don't cut it with overclocking. How many modules are being used and what speed? But, even most PC-66 memory will at least go up to 75 MHz FSB if it's set at CAS-3 in the BIOS. Still think it's a cooling issue. Heat is the enemy.

Still need the mobo and what slotket (if used) would help. Actually sounds like slotket isn't set for Cumine.

The motherboard is a cheapo brand, it doesn't have a 'name' as such, the brand is PcPartner, thats all I can tell you. The RAM is cheap also :( But its only running at 100Mhz, (FSB+33), unless I overclock it, of course I do have the 4-way interleave driver enabler, I will uninstall it and put the mem back down to FSB speed, and overlcok again. I don't think its the mem tho, how do i check if the heatsink is attached properly? I mean of I touch the sink on the geforce it is always hot... but thats is common with the mx's...

Thanks for your help.

Oh, I have the lastest drivers for everything, and all the latest bios's for both mobo and gfx card. It's definetly a prob with the cpu/mobo, i tried unistalling the 4way interleave driver, and turning the mem speed to FSB, plus I have the latency at 3......

did you turn speed error hold off.

PCPartner sounds like another PCChips rename.
That is pure trash. Sorry but true.

However my 566s will not overclock till I use the voltage mod. They need 1.9 and then they run at 876mhz.

I have PC66Mhz SDRAM and its fine running 118Mhz 2-2-2 5/7 on this CUSL2-C, and it has ran 125Mhz 2-2-2 4way int on a VIA board B4. Its generic too, i bought it 4 years ago. Guess im lucky!
