View Full Version : smp with t-birds
I have read that it is possible to run thunderbirds in smp. But I haven't been able to find a definite answer on what motherboards might work this way.
What I have learned so far is that the MP chipset works (the older one), and the MPX chipset might work with a newer bios revision.
I'd like to know what motherboard, if any, will allow me to run my 800 mhz and 1 ghz t-birds, and what, if any, modifications i would have to make to my processors.
Please correct anything I have mis-stated.

The ONLY board that I have EVER heard of that could run dual Thunderbirds was the Tyan Tiger MP (and only with a certain BIOS revision.)
You would have to mod both of your processors to run the same multiplier, first. You could probably do this by doing the old bridge-L1 mod. This would effectively unlock them. Next, you would have to check the status of the L5 bridges and you may need to bridge one of the L5 bridges (some t-birds had the necessary L5 intact, while others did not.) Next, you would have to pin-mod the sockets on the motherboard to a specific multiplier (like 8X) and then put both the CPU's in. Last, you would have to set the FSB jumpers to 100 FSB.
Even after doing all this, though, it may not work. The board may not support dual CPU's at 100 FSB at that low a multiplier, because AMD never released a 800 MHz Athlon MP.
Bottom line: I don't think it is worth attempting, unless you already own a Tyan Tiger MP and don't mind spending (wasting) some time trying to get those CPU's working.
(All of the mods I mentioned above (except the L1 mod) are explained in the stickies, in this forum.)
all right, thanks. I was curious to see if this was even feasible. Sounds like it's not worth trying right now... a tyan tiger mp isn't really all that cheap
