i have an asus P3v4x motherboard and PIII450 with an alpha heatsink.
when i put the speed upto or over 585mhz windows 2000 professional will no boot up. it says that the file ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt. how can this file be corrupt if it works fine at 565mhz. or lower
any ideas anyone?

It could be many things but without more info on your system theres nothing but guessing at this point, we really need to know more, you may be running your ram out of spec or you may be at your CPU's limit until you burn in better, we need to know your temps at idle and under full load, also we need to know if you have any NIC cards as they dont like out of spec speeds. with a little more info you may get a few more MHZ
goodluck
Because the cpu or memory is not transferring the data correctly from the hard drive.
In other words it does not like the overclock speed.
Sorry must have writing this when you posted Outhouse.

wot are NIC cards?
its currently running @ 565mhz

voodoo 3000 AGP with a fan added
couple TV cards
winTV primo
DC10 plus

some old CNet Ethernet network card
usin Asus Probe :
when the computer was idle the temp was 27C

Network Interface Card. AKA, your ethernet card. Try taking it out and try booting up again

well NIC are your network cards, also since your running with two different kinds of ram one of them being 100 it will now run the other at 100 also you may try removing the stick of 100 memory temporarily to see if that helps [sometimes running 2 sticks of ram can cause unstability] also removeNIC cards as well as any others you have and see if you can narrow down your problem. What FSB are you running at and what CV are you running?

ok m8 i'll try that now.
the FSB is @ 126
and CV setting is at 2.00

You may want to try setting your PCI divider to /4 if you already haven't. That should help with the hardware conflicts

well iv'e tried it with nothing in except the voodoo 3000 and the 256 PC133 ram and it hasn't made any difference, it still says there a problem with ntoskrnl.exe.
the strangest thing happend tho, when i changed the ram to another slot. it started to boot up ok @ 130 FSB then resest itself and then started to say there was a problem with ntoskrnl.exe again.

what are your ram settings? there is a chance that if your ram is generic that maybe whats holding you up.

i put the CV upto 2.05 & FSB 130
and i've now got it running at 585mhz, no problem with that file on boot up.
at 600 the same problem starts again with that file.
even when i put the CV to 2.10 it still dont work.
is it safe to put the CV up anymore?? as it seems that this was the problem, all the other settings appart from the CV & FSB has remained the same.

some have ran there chips that high but it greatly decreases the life of the chip..id stay at 2.05, unless you were planing on upping the cooling system to water or something i wouldnt go much farther, expecially since it wont boot at 600 with 2.10v.

i've had to put the CV it upto 2.10 anyway @ 585Mhz
cos @ the CV of 2.05 it kept rebooting itself in windows after it had been running for a while.
