I just built a new computer and I am trying to transfer files from the old computer to my new one. They are networked using a D-Link DI-604 router and they are both able to access the internet perfectly. When I go to Windows Explorer and click on My network places, entire network, Microsoft Windows Network, then on MSHOME(the workgroup) it gives me a message saying "MsHome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently accessible." So do I need to change a setting on one of the computer so I can have permission to view the files and transfer them over. They are both running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 and all of the updates. Thanks in advance for your help.

make sure both have a username that is the same with the same password and make sure both systems have at least one shared folder.

Run the home networking wizard on both computers. This should enable filesharing and make sure both computers are on the same workgroup so they can communicate to eachother. When it tells you to- restart the computer. After everything is done, you can restart all the computers again (heck why not).

Later (although insecure) you can share your entire hard drive by right clicking it and going to properties. Then click the sharing tab. It may require you to click a blue link that says you understand the dangers of sharing... click it. Then under network sharing and security you can enable that drive to be shared, and you can give it a name.

Other users on the network will not be able to access your windows user files if you have a password enabled and have an NTFS, but they will be able to access others. If you must gain access to those files, you must have identical user name and passwords as the old computer.

Other than that, I have the same router as yours, and everything worked just fine out of the box. Check both systems and make sure they are being assigned in-LAN IP's. If you installed them in order on the router, the first computer should be http://192.168.0.101 , the second should be http://192.168.0.102 , and so on. The router is http://192.168.0.1 . You can check this my right clicking My Network Places, and clicking on properties. Then make sure local area connection is enabled, and right click, and click "status". Then click the "Support" tab. IP address should read 192.168.0.10x (where x is the computer that is connected to x port on the router). Default gateway should read 192.168.0.1.

If you think it might help, you can reset the router by going to the TOOLS tab, then the SYSTEM button, and then clicking on the RESTORE button under "restore settings to factory defaults".

Hope this helps...

Do U have firewall? disable all of them including the windows firewalls.

Yeah I forgot about that. Although your router acts as a hardware firewall, if you have a software firewall installed on any of your two computers (or both), it may be interfering with your home network. Windows firewall I think are compatible. Back when I had a crossover 2 computer connection, I used M$'s built in and it worked fine. But you never know... It could be the source of your problems...

yeah i had the same question as the 'topic-starter' thanks for clearing things up. I want to share files over a LAN (one pc has hardware that I don't and i NEED to use it). only problem is I don't have a floppy and IIRC you need one to install the home network. Is there any other way to do this? Oh yeah I want to network my computer to another (thats whats necessary, all 5 computers if I have to) and a printer.

I was havin that problem, but then I realized it was Norton Internet Security. I disabled it, and it works fine now. If you have it runnin in the bakgrnd, just disable it while u transfer the files and then enable it afterwards.

same workgroup?

That should not matter, as it says it cannot access the workgroup it is set to anyway.
