View Full Version : Far Cry demo #2 "Research facility!"
Saaawweeett! I just downloaded it and I am playing it right now!! yep I'm gonna get this game for sure. This #2 demo shows a different level..its called "research." And its a whoppin' 519mb, sorry 56K'ers.
For all you ATI brothers out there, I couldnt' get it to run with the Cat 4.1 or 4.2's...I had to load the 3.10's inorder for it to run.

Outstanding! better than the first demo put out, however I've been out of the FPS game for quite a bit and finding this game to be murder!. Graphics are outstanding and runs very well on my system. Remember if your an ati owner and are having graphical problems/crashes/lockups make sure aa and af are set to application prefrence in your ati control panel.

Yes, everyone please pay attention to 12am :) If you're having graphical glitches (bad shadows, odd textures too dark, VERY poor performance, etc) please remember to turn off AA and AF. I've seen people all over different forums complaining about it, and I've done my best to remind them all.
I've already preordered this game, now I must sit patiently and wait...

Sigh, i get a fatal error (something about consulting WIndows Installer or MSDN) every time I try to install either this demo or the original one...
Anyone know how to fix this?

I finally upgraded to Catalyst 4.2 and that took care of the shadow problems I kept experiencing. Now I'm running all the video settings at "Very High Quality" in 1024x768 without a hiccup. Should be able to go even higher.
I was having a tough time taking out the enemies at the beginng of the level. Must have played it 20 times without ever getting to the cave entrance. Then a friend of mine started playing it and got farther than I did on his first try.:mad:
Yeah same here, I kept getting wasted on th efirst part of the level, until....I made it to the high ground where the shack is with the grenade launcher. Then it was "my turn!" Heh...run little men! run! "Let me introdruce you to my little friend!":D

That's exactly what he did. Another question... has anyone taken out the helicopter?
And inside the cave research facility, do you get to fight the mutant beast at some point? I saw it in a cutscene, but never encountered it before going into the elevator and finishing the level.

You are pressing the wrong file to install the demo.. if i remember correctly there is a setup icon and I think a far cry icon file in the unzipped download... choose the other file to install the demo.

That wasnt the problem, aparently if you select DX9.0b as one of the things to be installed along with the demo it gives out that fatal error. When I de-selected that option it was smooth sailing from that point on.
Worked for both the original and the 2nd demo.

Arrrr I hate Far Cry.
Mainly because it isn't fun! I don't find doing the SAME. EXACT. PART. 200 times fun! It's not fun whatsoever! It's not rewarding to beat the mission. The AI is pretty stupid. I saw 5 guys running into each other, and watched for 30 seconds. Then 1 guy saw me, shot, and everyone else ran after me and killed me. Then I loaded 10 minutes back at the last checkpoint. Fun.
My only rant is about the drivers. I wish the new ones worked. Meh, can't really complain though. Sooner or later the problem will be fixed.
Yeah thats kinda bogus. I had to revert back to the cat 3.10's...but the weird thing is that they give my TV tuner a much better picture quality too. Better even then the 4.2's....I havent' event ried the 4.3's dont' even see a need to now that the 3.10's are working great.
BTW, my retail copy of UT2004 is 2 days away on a FedEx truck woooooooTT!:D

281 KB/sec on that first link. Thanks! Everyone is saying this is better than the first demo. That one got boring quick, and didn't play very smooth.
I shot down the Copter tonight finally, i ran up the little hill smoked the 3 guys near the launcher and as the helo dropped off the guys i launched 2 grenades and it went up spun around a few times and crashed back down to earth, complete with a body shooting out from the cockpit....yay
as far as the gameplay i dont care for it much, it seems the AI needs some work and the pathing.
i think it also needs some sort of story line, i feel like im shooting innocent people with guns who run after me when i get close to them....arses!

OK I don't get it. This demo is like 1/2 the length of the first, when I get to the top of the elevator and head through the exit the game ends? WTF? Where's the boats, the jeep, the rocket launcher of the first demo? I must be missing a significant part of this, or is the game crashing on me?
I can't get the game to stop hiccuping.
Every 20 seconds or so I get this odd frame lag. Almost like internet lag but I'm not playing online.
This is with AA and AF turned off in both OpenGL and D3D.
I'm currently using the Cat 4.3's and tried every one down to 3.7's.
I used driver cleaner between driver installs.
I am not overclocking my card.
Any suggestions?

Motherboard monitor can cause this behavior in 3D games.

unfortunately the game ran like a wet terd, so I do not want to play it anymore (even on 1024x768) w/ FX 5200 128MB, 512MB, 2.8GHZ 800FSB :(

The problem is with your vid card. The whole FX family has had problems with DX9 games. FarCry is a DX9 game. And you have the lowest card in the FX family....a FX5200. If you are gonna keep that card, get used to a lot of "wet terd" games. DX9 games are gonna start coming out more and more.

This second demo is pretty damned sweet, just as much as the first demo IMO and here's why:
The first demo showed what the engine can do outdoors... The huge landscape bit, the water, the trees, the foliage, and the vehicles. This second demo shows what the engine can do indoors... The "cave" with it's glossy-wet cooridors, the dynamic lighting, the fog, the darkness, and the cool "sonar" that your movement tracker turns into. We also get to see SERIOUSLY dense foliage in several areas of this map as well...
This game will definately require a lot more stealth than runnin-and-gunnin, which means it will probably **** off a lot of people :p

Man i love it, Im a stelth kinda guy and hate games like UT and Quake.
Definatly the best looking game so far. Eaven my highly o/c 9600pro has trouble when the settings are turned up. It reconises my main rig (see sig) as 'medium' performace. Ha i shudder to think what it will reconise most 'joe sixpack' type rigs as :D
Cant wait to try it online. Ive been waiting years for a game this good to comeout that can attualy test my hardware to a respectable degree! me thinks i need an 9800xt:D

I got the demo yesterday... played for about 2 hours... then I called about 7 stores to find that they were sold out. CompUSA had 14 copies left, so I got it from there. Spent about 2 hours on the training mission... this game is awesome. I remember when people were raving over BF1942 because it has similar features like this... absolutely wonderful, I've purchased two games in two years... BF1942 and this... I don't buy games very often unless they are that good.
I am using a FX5600 256MB, runs great, quality set on low and 1280x960 resolution with AA on Highest... still looks awesome.

Guess I will post it here too since there is a lot of FC traffic here.
In mid April there will be a patch to add Quick saves, so you don't need to worry about the silly check-point saving.

well i moved around slowly from the left taking out the first couple guys with sniper rifle, then sneaking up on the guys on the side of the hill killing them. then exchanging rifles, do not let them radio or call for help.
once you have made your way to grenade launcher take out chopper with 2 hits to interior then dispatch ground troops. I started with guys in boat then moved left to the cave entrance then take out guys on dock, firing as fast as grenade launcher will go, then move off hill picking up weapons and make sure you go to boat area and grab health and armor...
I didnt say i didnt take damage..just keep finding the health and armor and you can stay at full health...
once inside they are pretty easy to take out with smg i find the m16 blinds too much..use your grenades also....
at end I put a clip from m16 into the monster but he ran off...bs...eheh.....
have fun...
Having a fast rig may help at 1024 very high i get 60 to 70 fps and I have been playing fps since doom was out.......

If you're only on medium difficulty, a good FPS player should have no problems finishing basically every level with nearly 100% health. I have been playing FPS since Wolfenstien was a demo that I grabbed over my 1200 baud dialup connection to the local BBS, and I've been using mouse+strafing since it became available in Doom.
The real game I also played in Medium difficulty settings, and even then I had trouble with several levels getting through even with 100% health and no armor... More than a few levels I ended up with like 70% health and no armor!
I'm definately going to run the game all over again on a harder level, but I can already see it's gonna kick my ass!
