My CPU is locked (X5.5) and I can not get it overclocked over 742MHZ (setting up my BIOS - via software - System to 135...)
This is the best I can do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Doron.

Those particular chips are not known for their overclocking ability. The FSB is already high at 133, so unless your motherboard and PCI cards support higher speeds (140, 150+) you are out of luck.

Are you able to increase the voltage? What type of cooling do you have for the case and cpu? Unless you're cooling's good, you will not be able to increase your voltage, which generates more than average heat. Increasing your voltage may be necessary to run the CPU at faster speeds.

well the highest fsb available on the P3V4X is 166, so you should be fine, what might help is adding a heatsink to the clock generator chip, this helps getting higher fsbs, look at tips and reviews-motherboard reviews, they have instructions there, just go up slowly and if it doesnt boot, add some coltage :), also get a good cpu fan Globalwins are nice, but the best is Alpha personally i have the VGSo8H(Globalwin), its not bad for 18 dollars, but i agree with doron, you probly wont get it too much faster, maybe like 850-1000

I usually don't agree with me either :)

Ok, there are 2 versions of the P3V4X. The older version is able to reach 166 FSB. The newer version can only reach 150 FSB. I have the newer version. He might also, so 150 might be his max. The only difference between them is that they have a different clock generator.

true, i have the old one, and if you do have the old one, putting a small hs on the clock generator helps unlock/stabilize a couple higher up fsbs

I WISH so bad that I had the old one! I really wanted to try to push a little more out of my P3. Is there ANY way I can actually do something to it to where I can reach higher than 150 FSB's? A mod or something?

Are you trying to say that your FSB [frontsidebus] only goes to 135?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

read through the tips section and get yourself a good background would be my best advise for now. What are your temps what kind of memory do you have what is the rest of your system, hard drive, NIC cards, video card ect ect .

goodluck

Im in the same boat as you, same board same chip...I spent a good amount of time trying to strech a little more and havent found anyway yet :-(

I've got the same chip. Gigabyte mother board. And can only get to about 145 FSB. I think my hard drives are holding back. There old Western Digital 5400 rmp ata66. And Gigabyte boards suck for anything over default. I really doubt cooling the processor is an issue. I just put a 80w peltier on my chip. (negative 10C idle 3C full load) And still can't go any higher. Something else is holding me back. I know if I want to go any higher it's going to take a new mobo, new hard drives, new crucial ram, cooling on the clock gen. might have to get rid of the dvd, nic, ultraATA66 card. Not going to happen, I'm staying put and being hapy until I build a new system. Next time I'll know to get a processor with the 100mhz buss and OC form there, then i can play with the PCI divider.

Well i'm not sure if your saying you can only get your CPU stable at 135 or weather your MB only has settings to 135, i'll try and answer both if its #1 your memory may be out of spec but its just a guess as we need to know weather its PC 100 or PC 133 cas 2 or cas3? generic or a brand that is overclocking friendly. if its PC 100 or even one stick of it then that may be part of your problem as your running it out of specs. if its #2 then maybe there is a BIOS update but you will have to check if not ot sound like your MB may be a little tough to work with, you may if the cost justify the extra performance get a new MB thats overclocking friendly, check the CPU database and see what others are doing with your CPU as well as what there runing to get to the speeds there at.

I'm using the P3 733 also, but on an Abit board. I get 150FSB at default voltage no problem (only 825MHz though). I had to step up gradually 'til everything got "accustomed" to the higher speeds.

Also got a Gladiator/Delta HSF... and turned on the AC in here. :-) I used to think all the talk about cooling was BS but this turned me into a believer. Now I can flip between various FSBs without a hitch.

This one can run easily at 155, and can force it to 160 playing with memory settings. There's still room for growth with yours, but the CPU is a cranky bitch. :-D

Just a thought, but what slot adapter are you using? As far as I know the P3V4X only came as a slot 1 Mobo. if there are jumpers on it you may want to have a look and see if they're in the right positions.
