I'm working on a case mod that should be done by Thursday! Yes, it will be done by then. I'll have from when I started Sunday till then to finish it. It was raining outside, so I really go outside to the garage to take pictures of the case... so I'll reveal the case tomorrow. :o

The computer I'm going to be modifying will have a soul purpose to just play MP3 files.

Parts gutted from my old Compaq 5151:
Compaq Motherboard
ATI Rage II+ On-Board
Aureal 3D Sound On-Board
AMD K6-2 350mhz
97mbs of PC100 RAM

All that:
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/nova1.jpg

The problem is that the case I'm putting this computer into is too small for the Compaq oversized non-standard AT PSU. So what I did was grabbed my HIRO ATX and do some wire splicing to create a modified Micro-ATX PSU that would be small and more powerful. Everything went smooth until I accidently cut the wires at the connector end of the wire. As seen by the red splices of annoyance! Its a mess and hack job for that one, but it works!

I was/am going to make a box like this for my car, maybe looking at how you do it will keep me from messing the whole thing up :D. I cant wait to see how this one turns out.

Sorry for no updates Monday. My cable modem decided to crap out. Oh, that and the motherboard lit on fire. :D I'm going to take the shotgun to it and buy a Mini-ITX for this project and unfortuneately delay it till the parts arrive.

One of the capaictors let out magic smoke. I've replaced it already and it boots, still have the Mini-ITX on order though. :o

Time for updates! Bear with me, might tell a few stories or two to go with the pictures.

Hardware acquired so far:
VIA Epia M10000 Mini-ITX
256mb DDR
Toshiba Slim line DVD-ROM (24x/8x)
Slim line ATAPI to IDE converter
New audio cable to replace the bad one.
Western Digital 5.25" BIGFOOT TX 8.9gb hard drive
The Case - 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic, Navy blue and grizzly rims!

Need:
PW-70A PSU for Mini-ITX board

Finally, the case! The story behind the car's name Nova is odd. My friend wrote a story with a character with bubble gum pink hair named Nova. Coming home from Hershey park one day, my other friend sticks the tube of leftover pink cotton candy on my attenna and promptly named my car Nova. (Promptly making it gender confused as well.) Considering the cotton candy had only been exposed to wind on the way home, we figured it was safe to try to eat. It tasted like truck exhuast. :p
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/case1.jpg
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/case2.jpg

Now that friend that friend that had stuck that cotton candy on there isn't the friend I took to the prom and loved dearly. She's turned ice cold ***** and has banished herself to the firey pits below! She loved to wear these big boots and one day, since I still had the original audios coming out to the front seat, decided to stomp on them and flatten them. I wasn't too happy. Now time for wire hiding/management, replacing that wire with a longer one to reach the back seat.

That should be all for now... oh well... a friend was wandering the neighborhood and I decided to take a picture. Trust me, this is common around here. ;)

Just trying to spice the thread up. Not going to have a boring work log here... hopefully.

Forgot to mention, getting 256mb DDR with the motherboard. Only paid $150 for the motherboard and RAM. The motherboard costs $150 new.

There will be no LCD at all. Sorry to disappoint, but the cost is way more than I can afford. I would love to get a 10" Lilliput touch screen, but they are about $200-$300 each.

As for wiring to the car audio. Look at the pictures where I'm installing the RCA cables in the dash. I modified the inputs on the stereo so I can hook those cables up. Then just run the wires through the car to the PC. When I want to listen to MP3s, I flip a switch and tune the radio to a dead station.

Why, something they invented before the mouse. ;) The keyboard of course! I started using computers before they came out with the mouse. I freaked people out at school when I would turn off the monitor and still use the computer. :o

It will be a 16 key number pad in place of a keyboard though. MPXPlay is a DOS MP3/OGG player that works wonders.

Working on setting up the OS. No new pictures yet. I may have fubared the hard drive. :(

Build cost tally so far:
Via Epia M10000/DDR 256mb - $150
44pin to 40pin laptop hard drive - $9.49
Toshiba 24x/8x DVD-ROM - $14.31
Toshiba HDD2144 6gb 4,200rpm - FREEBIE!
15' Stereo RCA cable - $10
Stereo to mini headset plug - $5

Total: $188.80

Thats a really awesome idea. Is the PSU run directly from the battery or is it powered from an inverter. (I know that kinda defeats the purpose of changing from 12 v dc to 120v ac then back to 12 v dc

Alexia
03-14-04, 11:01 PM
I did fubar the 2.5" hard drive. I'll be installing a 5.75" Quantum BIGFOOT TX hard drive. :p

Suicidalmole, go check out http://www.mp3car.com/

Cooper, the PSU I'm getting is the PW-70A (http://mp3car.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=29&osCsid=7a834e187f8162d17ea25a9a8722bce2) which puts about 120watts max. The PSU I have pictured is my testing and setting up PSU. Replaced two fans in it already. The used fan was dead and I dropped a small screw driver into the cover today ripping a fin off.

They do have a standard ATAPI interface, but a specialized connector. The little circuit board screwed onto the back is like a breakout box. It takes the connector and turns it into IDE, CD Digital, CD Analog, and power connector.

Per request!

Two questions:
1. where did you find a slim line DVD drive with adapter for so cheap?!?! Ebay?

2. Does anyone remember when Maxis made great software, and the lama actually reminded you of them. Also I think if someone was to invent braces for lamas they could be rich.

Local computer store. :D I bought the adaptor online. They also have slim line CD-ROMs for $10 and slim line floppy drives for $5. Mostly from Compaq laptops. I bought one of the CD-ROMs too. :o
EDIT: They sell them cheap because they have no way of testing them.

I don't think there needs to be a Llama thread!

No such thing as a hot spot in my area! Though, I can drive up to the house and link up almost instantly. :p Just need hardware which I don't need to buy yet. I could just pull the hard drive out for a few minutes, easy either way.

I SO WANT A VESPA! :D Furi Kuri? Via's new Nano-ITX would be perfect!

The thing is 1:30 to boot into playing MP3s and the interface is really only friendly if you have a monitor. MPXPlay is 20 seconds to boot and it super friendly without any type of display. When you are getting in your car, a 1:30 is a good deal of time. It was 2:10 before I optimized Windows XP.

Just got a lot of power today! PW-70A DC-DC PSU, ITPS 12v regulator, and some OEM parts for the Jeep.

See, that is odd. It was letting me post three images per post before. Now I'm downgraded!
EDIT: Its letting do it now! This forum is possessed!

The thing about the ITPS is that the heatsink is hooked up to +12 volts. If that touches any bare metal on the car or the motherboard plate, oh beeping beeeeeeeeep! So its time to put one of those souvenirs from camping trips I keep laying around to good use.
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/itpscase1.jpg

Drilled a mounting hole and a hole for a fan to blow across the heatsink.
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/itpscase2.jpg

The ITPS fits inside very well and I drilled mounting holes for it. The fan on the back is a 7,500 RPM 30mm YS Tech fan.

Actually, this has been discussed quite a bit! The main problem being is weather. Summer time, even with radiator, you are still trying to using water around 100F to cool the CPU. Winter time, you are using ice(if no anti-freeze, condensation as well) to cool the CPU. :( Its possible, just would be more maintenence than its worth.

Not the noise of the car, the noise of the speakers going THUMP THUMP WHAT THE BEEP?! THUMP!

G33k
03-23-04, 05:19 AM
Ah, some good points there - I'd not thought about that. You might be able to solve the winter problems with lots of insulation, but summer problems would be more of an issue. In fact, surely that's going to be an issue anyway - what happens when you leave your car in the sun and then try to run the computer?

Some updates today. I got the dash switch installed today. Been busy tutoring and working!

Needs to be done:
Mount a location for the IR remote.(Possibly to the same spot as the keyless remote, tight and would have to mess with the carpeting of the roof - tricky.)
Wire power from the car to the ITPS/switch.
Replace all the burnt out dash bulbs and the ones I broke. :(
ROCK ON BABY! (Figure out how to get cool stickers of forum logos for my car!)
Install cold cathodes in the rear.

Two pictures of the SAME Llama! Mwuhahahaha!

OMGWTFBBQ! SUPER UPDATE! :D

The switch and plastic housing here is taken from pre-1991 Jeep Cherokee when they stopped making the Power/Comfort transmission. This switch will keep the computer from turning on when moving it around in the driveway.
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/wire4.jpg

Here are the three wires neccessary to hook up the power. Ground, unswitched power, and ignition switched power. The key when in the accessory position and the dash switch on will tell the ITPS controller to boot the computer. Turning either off makes ITPS do a normal shutdown like pressing the button on your computer.

The ground wire hooks right onto the body and battery while the unswitched power wire hooks into the terminal coming off the battery into the power distrobution block.

It works! Had a slight problem with it not working at first. Cleaned up my mess and took the computer inside to get everything configured correctly. The boot time was one minute thirty seconds, but I cut it down to thirty seconds using hibernation.

OH! Its a Sony XR-C450 tape deck with AM/FM reciever! I took a picture because I was bouncing around all excited with gleeeeeee! :D

The only modification I did to that was to hard wire the AUX inputs in the back to the FM tuner. Normally the AUX inputs are only active when a MD/CD changer is hooked up.

Nice, i've been meaning to get a hold of one of those EIPA Mobos for a while now.

I bet i can tell you why your Compaq died: Non-ATX Power Supply means Non-standard wiring scheme. AKA Color coding is not the same, resulting in things going where they shouldnt.

Its a great way to fry a Mobo you dont like though.

Also, do you know where that MP3Car.com store is located? Is it in America? Its not posted anywhere apparent on their website.

Thanks, and what anime (or manga) series is your avatar from?

Yah, and FLCL = :D

Its from Ridge Racer! Actually, the Compaqs PSU is ATX compliant, just that it used three AT style connectors.

MP3Car.com is located in America. The owner Ziplock is currently in the middle of moving, but he took the time to ship my stuff out. ;)

Update!

Currently in the middle of writing my own custom interfacing software for Winamp. Media Engine is a great program, but it heavilly relies on a screen. I'm writing a program that is input only for now.

It can be controlled by the IR remote and a keyboard. If will also be able to skip ahead in the playlist based on directories. So if you have all your artists/album arranged into directories, you can skip between them a lot easier than skipping one track at a time through thousands of MP3s.

The software will be open source and called Tiny Music Embedded. Perfect for anyone who needs input only.

Um... I didn't know if they liked project logs or not. :o I'll post it when I'm done or if you ask my to. :p Yes, actually, it runs very nicely there. Just can't control it yet... which is very annoying... especially when you find out dueling banjos is on your playlist.

While the inside of my car gets very hot in the summer, the space under the seat stays rather cool because its not in direct sunlight.

sorry this is the first time i've viseted this thread...

"It will be a 16 key number pad in place of a keyboard though. MPXPlay is a DOS MP3/OGG player that works wonders."

i dont think you still plan on using it, but...
rock on, dude. i have a cardbaord box computer that i used for a DOS only mp3 player (with MPXplay), the + key to switch to the next song. it was AT so all i had to do was turn on the surge bar and the music would play within 15 seconds.

you could PM me if you need help with the playlist part, not that you would need it to display all of hte ID3 tags without automatically loading them each time (you can save to a list a and it takes all of half a second to show them on boot) but i had that set up. i loved it, and people gave me funny looks. Now its in my closet still in hte box, i stole the PSU from it for another project and killed it...heh. Oh well, i got my new system now, and it stayes on whenever i'm in there, boots just as fasts...and still playes mp3's. (although for some reason on 2 channel i cant get decnet sound quality from my mobo...)

oh, and bigfoot drives are sexy :p i have a 1.2 gig one somewhere...

Nice worklog, the pics of the llama have to be the most hilarious random thing I've seen all day :). Cool idea for the car mp3 player. By the way, I have a 98 grand cherokee limited (with the 5.2l V8 and quadra-trac all-time 4wd in case anyone was wondering :D). I replaced all the speakers with Rockford Fosgate 6.5" 100watt speakers (don't remember which ones exactly). They really sound great, and I'm using the factory infinity gold stereo. You could look into those as an alternative. That's my suggestion anyway.

My speakers should be delivered on Monday! YAY! :burn:

First release of my software:

1.) Download both and let them install to the same location.
2.) They will place shortcuts in your start menu, please run the config program first before running TME otherwise you will just get a big error.
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/upload/TMERemConfig0-9.zip
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/upload/TME0-9.zip

Modes are not implemented yet, so don't worry about the keys.
PLAYLISTS MUST BE SAVED AS *.PLS TYPE IN WINAMP!

Works with keyboard, Creative CMR-100 remote, and IRMan.

I didn't get keyboard input configuration finished so you will notice that that part of config doesn't work.
Default Keyboard keys:
Left - Skip back
Right - Skip Forward
Up - Rewind
Down - Fast Forward
Numpad Enter - Play
Numpad Minus - Volume Down
Numpad Plus - Volume Up
Numpad Multiply - Mute (Not working - known bug.)
Home - Toggle Shuffle

Numpad Del/Period - Stop

Well, the speakers came Tuesday instead even though they were in the warehouse Friday. :(

Polk db525 speakers for the front doors. Just freaking AWESOME. They are a step down from the top of the line MOMO series. To a little brain work to install them. Stuck the magnets to the metal door to hold them in the air.
http://www.experimentalinsanity.com/case/nova/speaker1.jpg

Pioneer TS-A1370R for the rear pillar. Great $50 speakers for the rear. You really don't need speakers in the back, but they are great for filling out the sound in the car. By the way, if you have a Jeep Cherokee and have this pillar, be prepared to be in a world of pain to get the pillar out to change the speakers.

Remember the picture of the head unit I took for apparently no reason? I gutted it and mounted the IR reciever in there... case mod complete! :D

Dunno if you knew this or not but the 710x and 810x were discontinued in manufacturing and the ones remaining are whats left of the mass stock (So I was told by the retailer that sold me mine) :(

I have an 810X that I bought for a friend for her birthday, and it went bad (no power). Went to the store where I bought it and found that it was being replaced by a very much uglier model.

However! Sony was able to replace it with a Refurb for free under warranty, yay! It took like 3 weeks though, slackers. I love the symmetry in this radio, sony (usually) does a good job making asthetically pleasing products :)

Has 7 different colors, not just 4! (white, light blue, and yellow)
