View Full Version : To OC or not to OC? That is my question.
Ok I have a Gigabyte GA-686LX4 mobo with a P2 300 SL2W8 which is supposed to go 450 easy from what I've been reading. No FBS settings in the bios can change from 66 to 75,83,100 with 3 jumpers. Voltage is locked in at 2.0 Have dual fan cooler on cpu. Have lots of PCI cards in system. 3c905b nic, voodoo2 12mg, ati vid card, and supra 56k modem. Will they all get fried? 192mg 100 ram I'm pretty sure. Cpu temp is steady at around 36C right now at 66. Should I try to bump it up a little to 75 first or can I just set 100 right off the bat or should I just forgetaboutit?

Hey, it's always worth a try. My first mobo had jumpers for settings. I only managed to gain 100 MHz but it was still OCed. Try a little at a time first and see haw things react. By the way you cards should be fine.
Good luck and welcome.....

Hi Face,
You can OC it @450Mhz rising ,in step, Fsb, but attenction with 83Mhz coz generate non standard Pci frequency that can give more probs with Pci card & data on HD!
You need to monitor your system temps and have a great coling section, I'm speaking of Cpu cooler, a thin layer of thermal paste and case fans that increase airflow.
I hope it helps you ;-)

I also think you should overclock.
Tell us how you do.

I'd try 100 right off the bat, it'll be the "sweet spot" for your PCI cards and you won't have to worry about them getting fried. Everything will be in spec except your processor. 83MHz will be shaky as a lot of PCI devices cannot handle that kind of PCI bus (41.5MHz). Be sure to monitor your temps because if you're using the stock HSF, they could get a little toasty. Don't let them go above 50C for stability, and try to keep them in the 40C to 45C.
