View Full Version : PIII L2 cache
how do I enable the L2 cache on my 850mhz PIII? I thought this was done automatically, but after I looked at my detailed system specs (via software scry) I see that my processor is only using L1 cache; its on a Gigabyte GA-60XM7E mobo, which has the intel 815E chipset. Thanks for help.
What do you mean by "via software scry"?
Did you use a program such as WCPUID? This gives L1 and L2 specs. What program are you using which makes it appear that L2 is disabled?

there should be an option in bios which lets you do that

The L2 cache came setup disabled?? DID you buy this comp from a store? or a third party person?? or did you build it?? It could be an FAKE PIII (celeron) I have never crossed a PIII that had it's L2 cache disabled. If you got it from a third party person then maybe they have been overclocking it, as we all know many disable L2 cache when overclocking for more stablity. So whats up?
I just used windows system information to look at my specs, but I know there are other programs that do this. I built the computer myself, using brand new componets from various distributors. The information list reads 'Pentium III 850mhz' then 'L1 cache.' Long ago I checked the BIOS for either 'L2 cache' or 'Secondary cache' options, but none exist. Is there another name for it? thanks for replies.
there are numerous CPU identification programs out there. I downloaded one off of shadow's ftp site not too long ago, I think it's called WCPUID. check yahoo, there should be a downloadable version someplace. If your motherboard is supported by the program, and it still comes back as disabled, you (or more so the person who sold this to you) have a problem.

SOUNDS to me like you got scammed all pentiums have an option in bios to enable/disable L2 CACHE it doesn't matter the board or the bios company. If this setting is not there and it comes back as disabled in those programs such as WCPUID then yeah you just got a celeron. I would go back to where you got it and ask them about it. Not worth paying for a Pentium if you ain't gonna get the extra 128K of cache.
