View Full Version : Celeron VS P///

This is not a question of how hot is too hot its a question of can a Celeron run at the same temps of a P/// for long points of time and not degrade the life span of the chip.
I have heard that the spec for running a P/// is 40 -50ºC. Well what about a celeron can it run at the same temp specs? I haven't heard anyone say anything about the temps on a celeron. I try keeping mine under 85ºF. More or less I am wanting to know is it ok to run a celeron as high as 50ºC which is somewhere around 120ºF

should be as they are the same core.

yah its fine, if you want to blow out the CPU, i wouldnt recomend it

OK well I see I have a debate going here so Willam and Endeavor what Temp should I call max?
William

umm, i don't know about intels specs but call absolute max 75C although I would be seriously worried and afraid at 65C.

Jesus willam 65ºC = 149ºF are you sure about that?
William

an AMD cpu is "rated" up to 90C by AMD. Intel is a hardier chip, so I would say that would be the absolute worst. I would keep it below 65C which isn't hard to do at all with a Celey or P3.
*MODIFY*Note, I don't recommend you let the cpu ever get above 55C, but I am very sure the CPU would live at 65C.

I don't think I could get my system stable long enough right now to hit 149ºF. That would be one massive Oc for my little celeron2 633
William

and now you have hit the nail on the head, the Intel CPUs don't get anywhere near that hot with good cooling.

Thank you Willam. I was freaking at 90ºF lol lmao. I'll see what this pup can do I think if I can get it stable via burn in I should be ok but untill then I'll just run at 712mhz.It can run faster but I think something doesn't seem to like the specs. Now I have to find out what part that is.Knowing my luck its the motherboard. This is for you Tekram [img="http://forums.overclockers.ws/forums/Public/Images/Default/E55.gif"] .I still haven't forgotten about the crap bios that you put out

i wouldn't let the temps slip past 55C, just want to reinterate this.

I'd have to be running 980mhz and about 4 clients of F@H to get that. To bad my system can't take it. When I run 980mhz and run just one F@H client it will shutdown the client.

ive had an older pIII 700 run as high as 115 celsius... the fan wasnt running... but the sink was on... i was folding... but i left for the weekend.... after that... teh cpu didnt oc as high as it use to.... but it still ran....
intel makes very heat resistant chips... i think it jsut killed it a lil bit, cuz i couldnt oc as high after the 115 celsius adventur....

you want to keep it low for overclocking mine is 20 - 30 all the time but celerons can handle up to 90

the max is 40C

intel calls 75 max....you should be fine up to like 55-60, of course your cpu probly will only last 1-2 years...but that probly wont help

i know you can run an Intel CPU well over that. 75C as Intel's max sounds right, though I am sure they can take it further than that.
I read somewhere that the Celerons start getting a bit flakey at 40+c. Chances are you'd likely have lock up related problems before anything else. I try to keep mine at or about 35c under load.

50ºC !!!???!!!! HECK NO!!!
Whoa man, I NEVER let my precious p3 get over the 40's, if that happens I turn her off right away!.. I've heard of some peopel reaching 50c a few times, and then wonder why their puter wont boot up anymore!..
Sooo to make a long post short.. No my friend to NOT let it get near that high or you will be looking for a new chip atlest.
Good luck,

I'm sorry man I just cant beleive that, you must mean 115ºF right?
I mean at 115ºC your board would MELT, no???!?!?!

LOL if you know people who have had p3's that have died at 50c, then they are either a) lying b)have killed it some other way.
I guarantee you will hit 50c on hot days with stock intel fan.Hell i even hit that on cold days before i got a decent cooler. You think intel are gunna kill their chips on purpose?? nope.
Like william said, about 90c is the max without it dying. But try to keep it below 50c at all times.Intel arent gunna put 90c on their site if it dies at 40 are they.

Celeron 400 was running at around 65C for about a year and a half with no probs. Just removed the tape and added thermal compound tonight. :-)

no... it was celsius... i left unreal looping and left for the weekend.... came back, and unreal still ran... jsut temp was very high....
the cpu went down from 933 to 875... i let it run low for burning in some more...

hmm. I always think that its a good idea to keep temps below 40 degrees C. If it goes up to 45 your not screwed or anything but to prolong the life of the chip try to keep it under 40. With the crappy intel heatsink temps probably average arround 40 anyways. Most of us have good heatsinks and we stay arround or below this temp too.

AmbientFiction,
Interestingly enough when I emailed Intel Tech support they seemed to think 50C was ok. Here's a direct quote "You're still at least 30 degrees below the maximum recommended temperature. I would not be concerned." (I can forward you the whole email if you like.) And as far as specs go, what your max temp is depends on which sSpec of celeron you have. Mine's an SL4TF which has a Thermal Rating of 80C. Your 633 would have to be either an SL4NY or an SL4PA both of which have a thermal rating of 82C. If you don't believe me check out intel's own specs.
