View Full Version : attn kingslayer re my 1ghz celeron post
i am debating which cpu to go to next.the 1ghz celly, with the 10x multiplier,or the p3 1ghz with the 7.5 multiplier.the tradeoff will be, higher clockspeed with the celly 10x multiplier but only 128k cache,or p3 with smaller multiplier but 256k cache.i have right now a p3800eb@900.150\150\37.asus cusl2-c mobo.thnx for any opinions

Personally, I would go with the PIII. This is why. Yes, the Celeron might get a higher speed. MIGHT. With Intel's locked multiplier it is harder to get higher overclocks with the high multiplier of the Celeron. But your overclocks are usually more stable with a Celeron because a higher Multiplier will keep your PCI bus speed lower in the long run.
BUT.
With a PIII and a good board you should come close to matching what you get out of the Celeron. I would imagine that seeing the Celeron is the same die as the PIII you are going to "hit the wall" at about the same speed. You have a higher FSB with the PIII and more cache so it's going to outperform the Celeron because of the better bandwidth.
Also look at availability. Hard to find a 1Ghz Celeron, but a 1G PIII are a dime a dozen right now. Not to many boards support the 1G Celeon, but there are many out there that support the PIII. If price is the only issue holding you up, then get the Celeron. If price isn't the issue then get the PIII. Even if for some strange reason you can't overclock either of these chips I would rather be stuck at stock speed with a PIII than I would a Celeron.
If you plan on keeping your Asus I would go with the PIII.
1. It already supports the 1G PIII.
2. It's a good OC board.
3. You can fine tune a PIII on that board to get about the same speed you would out of the Celery and the PIII will still out perform the Celery at that speed because of the cache and the FSB bandwidth increase.

I agree with Kingslayer. I would say that if price isn't an issue than you would want to get the PIII 1GHz also because it has at least double the L2 cache size and associativity that the Celeron would have. This in essence means a great performance increase because the PIII processor won't have to access physical memory as much as the Celeron will. As far as a 1GHz Celeron, I am assuming you'd be overclocking a 667MHz because it has a multiplier of 10 and I don't see anything listed on Intel's website above a 900MHz.
My sig says it all. I had a celeron setup, and I'll never go back.
