What a day I had at work today on a server config for a school district....Trying to explain the difference between Itanium, Tualatin, P3 and P4 can be so frustrating.

So...Dell, Compaq and IBM are all currently shipping 1U Rack Mount servers w/ single or dual 1.13Gig P3 Tualatin processors!!!! 1.26 Tualatin's will be available in August!!!

Anyways...customer calls and says...Why didn't we go with the Itanium or the New Willamette P4 Xeon...Why the plain old P3. :) So I start in...this is actually a new P3...It contains 512k of L2 cache...and in a dual server config will knock the pants off of a regular P4 or a trad. P3...Then we started talking about 64 to 32 bit porting required for today's aps with tomorrow's 64bit Itanium Processor. I have such a headache right now.

So...At least I get have to do some really cool research for work now...not the plain ole'..spec it and send it stuff. Man...Intel has made life very diffucult for a lot of VAR's (Value Added Resellers). The new boards running SDR Memory with P4's are gonna just gonna make things worse. Ugh...I love this stuff!!! :) So....If you had the opportunity to:

A) Spec Dual 1.13 or 1.26 (in August) Tualatins.
B) Spec Dual 1Gig P3's and save a little money
C) Spec Quad P4 Willamette Xeons and spend a ton of money.
D) Spec Itanium 64bit Processors and deal with an implementation
nightmare.

What would you do???

C.

If you're gonna do it, do it right!

personally, i would go with D. just because i wanna see if the itaniums are as special as they say (my dad was telling me that a 266 itanium is sposed to be as good as a pIII 700.....something about 128 bit CPU?)...oh well he confused me, anyone know stuff bout the itanium?

Rite now, B until prices come down A is not avalible or I would go with that. C cost to much and D sounds like a bigger headache
