View Full Version : Can you soft mod FX5700 to Quadro.....?
Ive got a MSI FX5700 256mb non-ultra. ( Hey I got it for free)
I've been searching the stickys for any info on attempting the SoftQuadro mod.
So:
Is it do-able?
See any improvments with my CAD apps?
Am I wasting my time?
Dump the card and get a 9800Pro? or FX5900 Ultra?

HELLO! someone help us out here.
No response in 3 days
c,mon u flashers is it possible?

no i dont think you can. it can only be done by hard modding but if you take it to a camera or tv repair shop they would probly do it fotr free or a little of nothing. it's acualy done by placment of small-tiny resisters on the gpu it self i have a shot of it somewere let me see if i can dig it up!
cool
That might be interesting.

goodluck and enjoy!
awsome!
what would be the advantage for doing this?
also
i wonder if this can be done to a 5900 nu

The advantage? Opengl programs speed up by like 100000% percent or some crazy number like that. Make sure to use the quadro drivers.
Ok...I see the pic
Now we need specs.
What kind of resitor?
You say a camera shop or TV shop will do this?
What would I tell one of their technicians? ...."Solder a thingie here and here"
A bit more info needed.

no specs neede. all you have to do is use the same resistors that are already ther just desolder them and then resolder them on the right place! its that simple.
but i would definaly try a camera repair shop first! they are more likely to have the most experiance soldering the real small tiny stuff. tv repair usually dosn't deal with parts that small but they can still do it!
good luck!
Thanks Walldow!
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Some last questions:
After I perform the hard mod , do I have to change the card's BIOS so the puter recogonizes this as a Quadro card? Or is it set to go?
Do I have to do any NVStrap/ Rivatuner stuff?
walldow

no bios change should be needed! once you install the quadro drivers the Drivers will see the card as a quadro card! and will install appropreatly! shouldn't have any problems.

this sounds cool, i wish my 5700 ultra works :( anybody know the pros and cons of doing this?

Hi, first post here :)
I'm a cad user and do a lot of 3d design, and have made the quadro hard mod to my old gf2 card, but currently own a 5600 nu, and can't find the info on what resistors to change.
Unfortunately my gpu has the plastic package whith a metal disc inserted, so the above pic of a 5700 core dont apply. :(
Anyone know where are the id resistors for this chip? or a link to usefull info please? Mi card is an asus 6500 vtd. I can take pics of it if anyone wants to help me in this.

WELCOME to the forums!:o
if you have the origanal fx 5600 chip 350/700 default clocks. and that, i think would be the problem! the resistors are under the plastic package and can't be gotten too because it is moldeed to the actual gpu!
now on the otherhand, if it is the flip chip desighn 400/800 default clocks. the casing can actualy be removed by using a strate razor to cut glue around the edges and remove the cover. and the resistors are in the lower right hand corner of the chip! i had a picture of the 5600 mod as well. but i'll have to search for it because when i got rid of my fx 5600 ultra i done away with alot of the info and pics i had as well!:(
i'll try and find it and post back as soon as i do!
I removed the fan and the card cpu looks just like the pic Walldow posted.
I'm taking my 5700 card into a TV /Cell Phone/ Cam corder repair shop today.
I opened up the card and removed the fan and MAN!....those resistors are small! I was gonna try the mod myself but you need a microsope with micro sized soldering tools to do this. I can solder but this will take some prof. work.
The TV repair guy said he'd give it a shot.
What have I got to lose...the card was free.....hehehe
I'll let you know how it goes.
cheers

howdy walldow, i was hoping you could help me with this... i've tried doing the softquadro from all the software things (bootstrap and rivatuner), but it never worked :/
i have a 128mb albatron 5900non-ultra epv (if u see a pic of it, it has this huge copper heatsink that is in the shape of a wierd bird or something that covers the entire card almost, and has three tiny blue fans on it), and was wondering if u have a picture or some advice for getting the heatsink off (thats not the hard part really, i got a pretty good idea of how to do that), and where the have the camera repair place take out the resistor and resoldier it.
thanks in advanced

It seems to be the original one, with default clocks of 325/600 (standard one, not ultra :( )
But closer examination of the pcb revealed some resistors very similar to the ones on the other pic; maybe in this package the id need to be set on the card. How could I check this before attempting the solder?

hmm, it would appear you would need to change the position of the top resistor.

hmm, but with 3 id bits, there's 8 possible combinations. Too much chances to mess up. :-/

I ran the standard Rivatuner/NVstrap/Softquadro4 on the 56.64 drivers, and it seems to have worked... I just got this card a few days ago, it seems to be pretty damn good, considering I'm still using a 4xAGP motherboard.
However, since installing it, it seems to crash when I'm not using the machine. I can play games, and pretty much anything, but when I leave it alone for a few hours and come back, its crashed. Error says something like "Error drawing something or other"...
Its not OC'd (cept the softquadmod, but it crashed before that too)
Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks in advance!!!
Well.....I dropped the card off to be modded at a local electronic repair shop and I explained what I wanted done....even showed him the pic from above link.
One guy there was a total dickwad and did'nt wanna help. The other guy was helpful especialy when I told him I'd slip him a $ 20.00 for his trouble.
Should have the card back by Friday......and hopefully she fires up and I'm in Quadro Land.

OK....
Got the card back today from the TV repair shop.
Popped the card in.....but realized I better put the heatsink and fan back on.
I noticed after booting the card identified itself as a FX5700 card....hmmmmm
Ill load the dirvers and see if it shows as the Quadro FX1000
Keeping you posted....
I'm in the process of putting a system together piece by piece. Next step, video.
I'm looking at the FX5700. Are there better manufactures than others for o/c? I keep reading about certain drivers. Changing parts?
I'm totally new to o/cing video. You cant insult my intellience as I have very little knowledge of this part of o/cing.
Thank you in advance.

look there is one thing you need to know if you are a seriouse gamer the fx 5700 is a great card and a very nice overclocker. but you can spend the same money and get a fx 5900 LX version witch is an 8 pipelined card instead of 4 pipes like the 5700. better all around performance. the only reason i bought the 57000 was just to see how fare i could push the baby. if all i done was seriouse gaming than i would definatly go with the 5900 LX version if you are not on a bugit then grab the 5900 Ultra!
but to answer youre origanal question. yes Albatron and Gainward tend to be putting out the best overclocking FX 5700 Ultras. these cards are being able to reach clock speeds of 620/1100 mhz strait out of the box with no mods and stock cooling. while other brands like EVGA and PNY are only hitting around 580/1050.
good luck
HEHE i almost gorgot!
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!!!!!!:o
Hold yer horses Hondo............
I installed my newly hard modded MSI FX5700 per the instructions/diagrahm above.....and it didnt take at all!
Card booted up OK.....but identified itself as a ....FX5700 still.
Loaded the latest NVidia Qaudro driver 56.64 and no go!
No Quadro FX1000....still FX5700.
Cant load POWERDRAFT or Maxtreme either.
My mod was done by a prof. TV repair guy with the right tools.
$ 40.00 for the labor to mod........ No biggie...at least the card still works.
Walldow:
What do you thinks going on here.
Wrong driver?
Did I miss a step here.
And how can the card still work when I moved those jumpers over as shown above? I figured it would have totaly ruined the card.

the mod should have worked. i have a friend here at the forums name FAFNIR who has done the mod! i myself havn't done it because in 3D benching it has no adverse effect on scores! it only helps in stability for modeling in cad. you might have to flash the bios after all. but thats not hard to do iether! i was thinking he said that you didn't have to flash them but maybe you do! it didn't mess youre card up because it was done correctly. try the bios flash. do you now how to use bios edior? all you have to do is get quadro bios and change numbers to match youre cards bios numbers. very easily done! the hardest part will be getting the Quadro bios? i would know were to start looking? try and PM FAFNIR tell him i sent ya his way and tell him what you are trying to do! don't dispare you'll get it just keep us posted!
Gotcha Walldow...
I sent him a PM.
I do see lots of links here for flashing card Bios's.
man, its only been three weeks doing something else and i come back and look what i missed
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=266005
something from ~mid january when walldow was off in the "beat 5900 w/ 5700 @700mhz" world, i was busy making the most out of my "new" *ddr2* quadro
so, here it goes:
1. what the "real" quadro 1100 looks like:
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040323/
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040323/opengl-fx1100-x2t-03.html
2. no bios flash is needed, BUT
3. if you look at my original post, i was using a 5700 --->> *ultra*; so therefore you might wanna start from there or get there first
3-b. them pci id's; THERE **IS** A DIFFERENCE, its in them drivers, but where normally the nv36 is not able to turn on the quadro features, the resisters moved DOES allow that to happen
3-c. NV36.DEV_0341.1 vs. NV36.DEV_034E.1 ; softquadro hex stuff will fix this easily
4. the original post was meant to point the *last and missing* step in the line, not the first and only step, though it used to be like that with slightly older drivers, see the 5900 into quadro 3000 article for the softquadro stuff that you're missing out on
5. the random crashing;
a. the mod wasn't done right, one of the points isn't touching and the reverse pci id check is failing
b. your core is defective, e.g. hardware aa is not working in hardware, e.g. use a 5700 ultra or at least a 5700, not a 5700 VE or LE or some other unreasonable mess like a 5500/5600 modded to think its a 5700, etc...
c. DON'T FLASH INTO THE REAL QUADRO, YOU'VE GOT DDR2, AND THE REAL THING IS DDR1, YOU WILL SCREW UP YOUR CARD
and now the real card modding stuff;
1. all the resisters are 0 ohms, you don't actually need resisters, either solder bridges or pieces of wires will do, you don't actually have to use a hot air blower and move em'
2. softquadro stuff is needed, not because they are all that you need, but its because there are redundant pci id checks and also core id checks that go on and those need to die, e.g. die die die.
the softquaddro is no longer able to fix the core lockdown, but its still good for the pci id checks, and thats what you're looking for, and the core id differences IS what this mod fixes
3. the mod, (e.g. once youre card really does turn into a quadro), raises your core temps by ~5 celcius under 3d mode, so if you've got some hardcore volt mod on there thats hanging at the edge and is dependant on room temperatures for stable operation, you might wanna get some better coolling, etc
apparently it also raises the tolerances at which the core throttles apparently by the same 5 degrees at least or so
4. the pci id's are done by the chip (and maybe bios also?) itself, so the softquaddro is a needed step here, dun worry about other resisters to move, etc
and oh yeah, i've also gotta thank walldow again for help on the 5600/5700 volt mod
but yeah, its not too hard at all
and yes, under povray and ug, your scores DO tripple, so its definitely worth it, 3ds sees the smallest increases (~40% under certain benches), then lightwave, then hard stuff like ug... etc
will write a bit more once i got the time
Fafnir.....
So your saying that I need to do the Softquadro mod in addition to the hard mod which for intents and purposes went OK.
If so...which driver wil I use?...The latest Nvidia?
Or do I first need to "mod" the non ultra 5700 to the ultra 5700?
walldow
03-27-04, 03:20 PM
LOL! hey Fafnir whats up bud! were the heck ya been? (probly sitten back laughing at this post we been racken our brains on:p ) hey you seen my newest 3D marks? and clocks speeds? if i can get this new mod down i believe 6k will be the mark, with a close to 900mhz core clock (I'm not joking a bit niether). send me a PM and i will fill you in on the details! after i get it done i plan on writing the volt mod artical for the FX 5700. i just realy feal this card isn't even maxed out yet it runs to cool, and it's not getting enough voltage to soot me!:D
anyway send me a PM!
walldow, just pm'ed ya
one of the things i've mentioned in the pm and that'd be great for everyone to see is this:
the "ideal" card:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_fx_5700_ultra_gddr3/images/04.jpg
gddr3 fx5700, the ram runs ~10c (maybe 15C) cooler than the ddr2 version
and combine that with the complete volt-mod package by walldow, then quadro the thing, and maybe we'll be stepping into fx5900/ quadro 2000 territory here
since the ram is known to run at 1.15-1.2ghz at stock, i don't see why 1.3-1.5? ghz is not possible, since the voltages DO start at 1.8v rather than 2.5v
or something like that
buy anyways, back to the "procedure"
hard mod, patch your drivers, volt mod, and then maxextreme and the card will think its the real thing
OR
file your own (existing) bios, change the pci-id with the last ray adams bios editor (and maybe the text also while you're at it), hard mod, and then volt mod, and the card will think its got wings
fixes all issues
btw, use the nvidia quadro drivers if you're really using the card for pro stuff, not the detonators;
and therefore use the det drivers if you're not using this thing for work, etc
assuming there's problems:
the ray adams pci id change fixes the card recognition (assuming there's problems)
the hard mod actually makes the card "work" (otherwise it won't)
the volt-mod speeds up the card (potentially, assuming you might need it)
and the softquaddro fixes the random crashing (assuming if the above either fails to work and/or doesn't for any reason pass the reverse id checks)
if the mod was done right and you've got a 5700ultra, the card will simply detect as a quadro fx1100 without any further steps or procedures (or at least it did that on mine, bios version 4.36.20.18.00E)
the bios was later updated to 4.36.20.18.01 and also re-pci-id'd, and also text changed to reflect a quadro 1100 at boot, rather than a fx5700u at boot
SUCCESS!
Card showing itself as a Quadro FX1100
Here's what I did:
I did the Softquadro/Rivatuner using Forceware 53.03
Patched the drivers/scripts and she works. I have all the extra open gl goodies.
But....
Should I have done the BIOS flash as well?
Or am I ok without doing that?
What would I gain from the volt mod Walldow?
How can I test my new "Quadro" card? Benchmarks?
walldow

well higher clock speeds of corse! the fx 5700 core runs suppercool. with the volt mod youre looking at around 650mhz--680mhz on stock cooling. go with a water setup and youre looking at 700mhz+. and on the ram the DDR2 runs way hot but 1150mhz seems to be the going number there, with a good set of ram sinks!
OK...got a step by step for the procedure?
the pci id vs softquaddro is an either/or option;
as in only one out the the two is needed, if at all, using both of them will not give you any benefits over using only one of them
but as some people like to use a "hard" process that will last them through formats, etc, and generally also more reliable, the pci-id method is also listed
to truely appreciate the additional speed, you'll need a copy of ug (unigraphics 17/18/19, etc, whatever the lastest is), or a copy of lightwave and just mess around with it and compare against the 5700 for noticable results, e.g. ug speeds up by maybe 300%
i don't think that 3dmark and/or games like serious sam will be affected, but if the game was developed using some of the newer tools and/or its a matrox specific game, you might see a small boost here and there, etc..
oh yeah, btw, its good that you're asking walldow about them volt-mods, as apparently he is one of the first, if not *THE* pioneer of the fx volt-mods(excluding the fx5800); (its a few of us on this o/c forums here, he's the first to get the thing working on a 5600; after a bit of research it branches out to 5900's and 5200's, etc, and now, the 5700)
