View Full Version : I lost my glasses...
some peeps helped me a bit last month, thanks.
Okay here is the info I have... PII 400, new motherboard, and the processor # is SL2S7 98140650R-0717 Malay
I tried switching some little black connectors (jumpers?) from A1B1/A2B2 (266/400mhz) I removed one and left A1/B1(333/500mhz) my system would boot up, and stay on "sleep" mode? what is the 266...or 333 mean?
Is anything possible for me to overclock, I want a 666Mhz, or something faster. I also added memory for a total of 192MB.

To be able to help you we need some info bout the mobo you use.
And by changing the jumpers (the little black connectors) you changed the multiplier and that won't work, unless you have an unlocked CPU.
To clarify the 266 and 333 (4x66=266/4x100=400) (5x66=333/5x100=500) (Multiplier x FSB = Speed).
Master KiLLor... thanks for the info, what is a "mobo", and where do I find out which one I have? I can bust my PC open at a drop of a hat, er...uh...3 screws.

lol....a mobo is a mother board, and if you dont know what that is, then you really should do some research before you overclock :), that or find a new hobby...

Now now...no need to get snippy.
A lot of people use shorthand and jargon here because for the most part it is understood. Don't let it put you off. There are no stupid questions, so please don't be shy.
I would highly recommend the information on the front page as a resource to get the basics down pat. I still refer to them occassionally and there is a lot of good information on equipment like yours.
To ask a specific "how-to" question, we will need very specific information on your system. Make and model number, including revision number if any, of the motherboard is critical. Knowing what your PCI and AGP cards are helps too for troubleshooting. Overclocking is not just cranking up the processor speed. All of the components have to be able to run at the bus speed, or the overclock will not be successful.

sorry if i came across snippy :), actually i was just saying that he would be in trouble if he didnt know what a motherboard is....
thanks peeps
Okay, I now know what a "mobo" is, I just had it replaced (under warranty), it is a "Compaq SPS-BD, Proc-686", <~~from my receipt. Is there a specific spot, that I should look for the actual #, let me crack the case and get back with my findings. As for my graphics, its a ATI Rage Pro(AGPx2). I have a DVD rom as well, 12Gig HD, 19" Sony Trinitron monitor, yamaha speakers w/ powered Sub. I also have this itch that I got down in "Bwoys Town" (Mexico), and it's itching like crazy.....

i dont think you can oc with a compaq mobo....
My "mobo" is new, it saysP120B0J25H20HP-assembled in Singapore. My pc also has 2 fans on at the rear(top), and one by the processor in front(bottom), is it me, or was that a clever idea if Im going to overclock, thanks Compaq. Another thing that is stated in the "compaq" site is that my pc should be able to get better performance with the latest "BIOS". Now if I could find out what "PCI" is, and how to find out what my systems' is. My memory requires PC100 SDRAM, is that any indication?
Other info that I have obtained for my processor...
Stepping~~~>dA1
CPUID~~~>0651
L2 Cache Size~~~>512K
Thermal Spec~~~>75degrees
Thermal Design Power~~~>24.3W

go to the compaq downloads section, and they should have the bios file, and the bios flashing utility, read the bios flashing tutorial at the overclockers.com homepage...PCI are those brown slots in which your sound card, modem, and or lan cardgoes, when you go out to buy memory just say you want PC100, that means it runs at a 100MHz fsb but normally can go like to 120fsb....also the reason i doubt if youll be able to overclock the compaq is because compaq desktops are fsb locked, and i would assume the same about their motherboards....i hope i helped
What is stepping? Why is it impossible for me to overclock? Why doesn't anybody have anything to say? Why do birds sing?... Ok, the first few jokes.... Since it seems to me that i'm SH*T Outta Luck, what PIII do you suggest for me to go out and get? What are the differences on the "MHz" anyway? It doesn't seem worth it to me to go and buy a PIII 500, if I have a PII 400, the difference is only 100MHZ? I use my PC mostly for websurfing, gaming, and the occasional DVD that I watch.
Everybody out there is sure that I can't even OC a little bit???

no, you can oc it, you just probly have to go out there and pay some money for a new mother board (compaqs will not oc)....also stepping has to do with the architecture of the chip...just a little difference(but a big one in ocing)....also a pIII 400 would perform a lot better than a PIII 450, because its architecture is far superior....YOU NEED A NEW MOTHERBOARD....there...then you should overclock....compaq is not friendly to overclocking....just go out and get an asus, or an abit, then you will be in business....;)
I have a P2-400hz, says on the "compaq" site that a P3-500Mhz can be "dropped" right in, the faq is old though. I went out, and bought a bunch of Kingston ValueRAM today (256MB) I got PC133, my system currently requires PC100 (in case of future upgrades), will this hurt my system in anyway? What P3 do you guys recommend maybe a P3 900? My "Mobo" was replaced 2 months ago, so I just wanna swap the processor.
When I installed the PC133 memory, I had a "error 146" code flash on the display, is that significant? I am using the 3 slots for memory, one is 32MB(stock), the other two are 128MB(Kingston), is it ok to mix memory types?
Is there a specific order I should place the memory in the DIMM's...i.e. bigger sticks closer to the processor, or smaller stick "sandwiched" between larger sticks?
I am currently using WIN95.

It depends if your motherboard supports coppermines. Depending on how old your motherboard model is, it may only support Katmai chips. I believe the PIII 500 falls into that category. The memory questions were pretty much answered in your other post. BTW, an upgrade from a PII 400 to a PIII 500 isn't just 100mhz. The PIII has about 70 new instructions that will help to increase peformance

Ok,
This is going to sound a little harsh, but some of the questions you just asked can only be answered by your manual. (ie: does my computer support "X" size memory modules?) I would also suggest highly that you read the informative guides on the main pages first, and get a clear understanding of what the parts to your mainboard are and what they do.
Before you flash the BIOS, change the processor, or try to stick memory in where it may not be compatible, you should read your manual first. Your mainboard may only support 128MB sticks of memory per slot, it might support 256MB sticks, only your manual knows for sure.
Since you have a Pentium-II-400, your mainboard is a slot type, referred to as Slot-1. Any Slot-1 compatible processor WILL drop right in, but your BIOS may need to be updated.
Since ALL Intel processors after the P2-233 are multiplier-locked, the only way to overclock one is to increase the frequency at which the system bus operates. Compaq motherboards do not have any provisions for this in their BIOS setup utilities. Compaq motherboards do not have any provisions on their mainboards (using jumpers) for altering the system bus speed. In short, for overclocking you are basically out of luck. You can upgrade to a faster processor, but that is all.
If you are happy with the rest of the system components, you might be able to replace the motherboard with an aftermarket board that has the features that you desire. A lot will depend on whether your video and audio are on separate cards in the AGP/PCI slots (the brown and white ones) or integrated into the motherboard itself. Beyond that, there isn't anything that we can do right now to help you overclock your computer in its present configuration.
What Slot1 pentium3 do you guys suggest? What is a good "ballpark" estimate on the P3's? Which is the highest MHz on the P3's?

i recommend a a 700E, or an 800E
Don't completely count out the lowly 600E, either. They're getting cheaper (I've seen several for $75-80 on e-BAY recently), and some of them overclock quite well... =) The thing you have to watch for with the 600's, is to make sure you get the right one. There are four different P/// 600 chips available. Two Katmai, and Two Coppermine. The easist way to distinguish them if you know the numbers on the chip, is the L2 cache (Katmai, 512, CuMine, 256) The Coppers have the "E" and "EB" designations which is the other giveaway. The Coppermine chips are the better ones.
You want to try to get one of the "E" chips, as they usually will overclock much better than the "EB" series. Although, I've seen some posts about some smokin' 800EB's, too.
600 - 800 E, usually can't miss.
And these P3 600E-800E, should be "plug and play"?
I have been having some error codes with my memory also, see my post under memory.
Thanks
