Lets say i had a P3 with an unlocked multiplier and its max multiplier was 8 what could i do if i ran into some problems over clocking it?

Let's say that i could run the CPU all the way to 800mHz fine either as a 800(8x100) or (6x133) but could not go over that speed. Would that mean my CPU is locked at 800mhz max?

Let's say I even tried 8x105 and the computer would not even POST, I would also be runnnig stock voltage 1.65v should I try raising the voltage? How much should I go up? What should I limit it at?

I am not completely new to overclocking, i had my 550E at 770 forever with no problems, but I never had to adjust anything other than the fsb to get it to work. Hell I had it 825 but did not want to stress my ram to much:) so I kept it at 770.

I have an Abit VH6 with latest bios and 448mb pc133 ram, all the cooling i am using is a golden orb and an open case. Plus an Aopen Geforce 2 mx (which I plan to clock also:D ) Also have an Aopen sound card.

Thanks for the help and support.

Well, just as another post was stated earlier today, you can NOT under any circumstances unlock the multiplier on the Pentium III. Period. The only examples of Pentium IIIs with unlocked multipliers so far are engineering examples built by Intel for testing, and if someone says they had one, either they a)stole it :) or b)are lieing (did I spell that right?).

The only real advantage to unlocking a processor, anyway, is to lower the multiplier and clock to a higher bus speed, unless your FSB is limited to a very low number. In this case, it can be raised to provide a higher clock speed while staying at the FSB speed's limit. When faced with the choice, always stick with the higher FSB if it's feasible.

if i had one of these chips, i would set the mulitplier to 6 and the fsb to 133

I think he might actually have one! He's being just evasive enough to lead me to believe that he may have "aquired" one, wants help with it but isn't dumb enough to advertize his "aquirement". I'm not saying anyone has done anything wrong here now, thats just the way things could be interperted. If such a thing were to exist I would recomend something other than an orb fan. To my understanding they aren't thought of too highly by most.

Every person new to overclocking will hit a wall when they try to overclock with a little pateints and some time here you will definantly get it higher, Do you have a unlocked Intel CPU or are you guessing?

Let's say that i could run the CPU all the way to 800mHz fine either as a 800(8x100) or (6x133) but could not go over that speed. Would that mean my CPU is locked at 800mhz max?

no CPU is locked at a speed, you will have to figure out whats holding you back but if yours is truely unlocked i would run with the highest FSB to improve bandwidth.

Let's say I even tried 8x105 and the computer would not even POST, I would also be runnnig stock voltage 1.65v should I try raising the voltage? How much should I go up? What should I limit it at?

Yes to get a good overclock you should raise your CV a little but you should only raise it enough so that under full load your CPU runs well below 40C How much to raise CV? well it depends on your CPU so i cannot say at this time but i would never go over 2.00.

I am not completely new to overclocking, i had my 550E at 770 forever with no problems, but I never had to adjust anything other than the fsb to get it to work. Hell I had it 825 but did not want to stress my ram to much:) so I kept it at 770.

If you want a really good overclock ditch the orb spend 20 bucks and get a good copper HSF like the Gladiator\Goldengate [check cyber deals] and use a good thermal compound.

Unlocked PIII's are absolutely worthless. What you want to do with it is sell it to me for next to nothing and hold you head up high knowing that you are safe from a chip that has been labelled "worse than a Cyrix".

Pay no mind to this man.......Mod's should receive all "unlocked" P III's. You must leave it up to professionals such as ourselves to dispose of such garbage.

(I hope you realize we're kidding)

Hey, I have an unlocked intel CPU.......................................... Intel Pentium 100 Mhz..... take that you locked out people..... The truth is that if your running into the processor instability with bus speed then keep it that way...................... you don;t want to up the multiplie runless mem. motherboard or components can't handle it........... besides, unlocked pentium iii's are for testing and I doubt you have one because they are not for sale to anyone....... anyway, seeya/

First I'd crap my pants if I had one then I'd find myself very nice chunk of 256 PC160 Cas 2. Then I'd get some arctic silver 2 and put a nice water cooled system in that pup running nothing but ice water trying to get it as close to -25ºF or lower than that and clock the ever loving sh*t out of it. That's what I'd do but if you don't want to do that you could always let me have it. lol :D

What's wrong with a Cyrix? (I can't believe I'm posting that!) Granted compared to Intel and AMD its completely worthless but beyond that what's wrong with it? My firewall / gateway machine is a 6x86 and yes its slow and has many compatibility issues but beyond that its rock solid!!! In my opinion Cyrix has gotten a bad reputation just because their product is crap. Now is that any reason to dump on them? Yes, yes it is. ;)

Seriously though its better than nothing. If anyone wants to give me an unlocked intel to compare to a cyrix I suppose I could be talked into doing a comparison, you would have to send along an intel board of course.

I think some of you are under the impression that it's impossible to get unlocked chips accidentally. In fact I sold one to a friend in Texas who is still using it. He has no clue about OC'ing and really doesn't care (he plays UO and UT....which take up all of his spare time) so running the chip at 733 (stock) or 1 gig really doesn't show him anything. I posted here once a long time ago I had one, but don't think anyone believed it and didn't receive any responses on it. Fact is tho, you really can get them I guess by accident as I did. (purchased locally at the same shop I go to even today)

Yeah, I've got an unlocked intel too.... P II 233...lol

Gee, what most of us wouldn't give for one of these chips (unlocked P///), just to test out stuff with.... If I had one to plug into the BE6 II R2 I've got coming next week......

First off, I'd soil my knickers just holding the chip in my hands... ???

Any FSB from 83 to 200 AND an unlocked multi?? **swoons** Now that would be some fun!! That's gotta be a trip...running it as anything you want...(Lessee, today it's a 700E, tomorrow and 800EB, next Tuesday I'll call it a ......)

Back to the original question here...

"If I had an unlocked P3 multiplier, what could I do??"

MAKE MOST OF US JEALOUS !! ??? ???

With the optional 40cfm fan?

Also. no one has really answered my question. I am not having trouble with the fsb speed, I have had my current components running at 140fsb for many months with my 550@770.
My problem would be, if I had the sforementioned CPU, is that I can't get it over 800mHz. If I ran it 800mHz the fsb wouldn't matter if it was 100 or 133. My problem would be getting the CPU over 800. Do I need to increase the core voltage? It is currently running at 1.64V according to MBM5. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, I really want to get it over a 1GHz, 1.2 would be nice:) Max fsb is 150 on my VH6 board:(

Again thanks.

even unlocked it has some limits. A 550 at a gig would be impressive.

The 733 I sold would do a gig w/o a boost to the fsb........then when I found the max multiplyer I added FSB to get it a bit over 1100. Only impressive to a point, but I was new to OC'ing at the time and never knew how to push the chip.

What I would give for an unlocked Itanium....
