Hope someone can help me answer these few upgrading questions:

1) Will my Asus P3V4X mobo accept a 1GHz processor?
2) Will my Asus S370-DL slot 1 adaptor work with the 1G FC-PGA?
3) Is there any overclocking potential here? (I know the 133MHz speed of the chip already limits me, but...)

My current setup:

Celey 533@850
S370-DL adaptor
P3V4X mobo
128 MB 133 RAM
Alpha cooler

hmmm...according to ASUS the mobo only supports up to 800...however i have heard of someone working a 1ghz pIII into it, if your slot adapter is fcpga then it should work, your ram may hold you back(unless you have say crucial or mushkin)....the P3V4X however does go up to 166fsb,, so theres always room there, but what i would do when i upgrade is get an 800 PIII (100fsb) and oc it to a gigahertz...

Ah. Your overclocking is limited to which version of the P3V4X you have. If you have the older 1.02 version, you'll have 166 available. If it's the newer one, you are limited to 150. As for the 1ghz thing, you should be fine since the multipliers are locked. As long as your motherboard supports a 133mhz FSB (which it does) you'll be fine

yes, thats what i wonder, if people have these ghz chips in there then why does asus claim that it only is compatible up to 800?

when ASUS produced this board, the fastest chip available was the 800. They just havn't updated their info.

I ran a 933 @ 1022in mine.....worked great.

Ok... sounds like my card and adaptor can handle it.

I like funnyperson's idea with the P3 800 oc'ed instead of the full G. Coincidentally, I may have a line on a Celey 800...is this a good oc'er, or was funnyperson recommending the P3 for a reason?

PS: Unfortunately, mine is one of the new and "improved" P3V4X's...ie., 150MHz fsb max.

If thats the case then it should be olny the Bios you need to flash back to the old version.(Don't know if I am right but that should do it)

AmbientFiction: Naw, they went and changed the whole clockgen on the mobo.

As I say, I think funnyperson has talked me into going with an 800MHz cpu...
Is the P3 worth the extra $$'s over the Celeron???

How does your generic PC-133 ram work. I saw a smiley face next to it. it must work good. my overall question is though, how does that ram work with games???? Does it make a big improvment????

oh it works pretty well the reason i put the smiley face is because i have alot....however i have to run it at cas3 to get it to 140 mhz bus....oh i said p3 for a reason to get a celeron that runs comparatively to a p3 800 you would have to go over a gightz, mostly its because of the reduced cache, and latencies, and such...the p3 is definitely worth the price increase

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think you've convinced me to go with the P3. I can remember just two years ago that it was unheard of in the overclocking world to pick a P2 over a Celeron. I guess Intel has increased the performance difference between the two with the introduction of the P3.

Now I find that it's difficult to find a P3 800 at 100MHz. Can't even find one on eBay!
