Does it show up in bios?
What windows are you runing?
If so are there any lose wires?
Jumper in wrong spot?
Do you have another cd rom drive there that is conflicting iwth it?

I am running Windows XP SP1
I have checked in BIOS and it shows up, it also shows up in device manager.
I have checked for lose IDE cables and power cables.
I have two CD Drives, one is a DVD and one is a CD-RW drive, the jumpers on the back of them are set as follows:
DVD Drive: Master
CD-RW: Slave
and they shouldn't be conflicting with each other as they have been in my system for 2 years now.

You didn't happen to do a system restore recently did you?
know its probably not linked but mine started this a month or two before the mobo died. had lots of weird problems happening with it, like power leds fading up slowly at startup etc.

i have recently upgraded my Motherboard, Processor and RAM, but it was working fine in my system for about a month. it happened just after i had installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum.

First we need to get back to the basics and work our way up. You checked the master/slave already. Good.
Make sure that the ribbon cable is seated fully. Perhaps take it out and put it back in to be sure.
Do the LEDs on those drives light up? If they stay on, then the ribbon is twisted some where. Take a look at that to be sure. If there are no lights, your power connectors are lose.
Also, look in the BIOS. Make sure that your secondary IDE channel didn't get turned off.
New Motherboard? Remove the old drivers for the old board in the device manager. Then install the newest drivers for your board. Get the drivers from the web first. It could be that your board is using PCI drivers from your old board.
I'm not trying to be a wise guy here, these are the basics that often get overlooked.
Hope this helps.

ok... i found out what the problem was, and i've managed to fix it now....
i went to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
in my registry and deleted the upperfilters and lowerfilters, then i rebooted and it fixed itself, and my CD Drives are showing up again.
