View Full Version : Why is my celeron 400 so hot?

Hi, im just considered overclocking my celeron 400 (the first time i have over clocked anything) then i realised that at 400mhz it is sitting at around 52 degrees celcius, is it me or is that REALLY HOT for a CPU.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Unclock that thing man thats hella hot what kinda heastink and fan do you have on it if its stock you need something better than that. Also what type of case fan do you have in the system (ie: Do you have enough air flow in the case)

Well if thats when it isn't under load, it sounds like:

1) the heatsink isn't on properly
2) the heatsink isn't up to the job

So, check that it's a decent HSF, re-sit it again and ensure you're using a thin layer of thermal paste on the CPU core too.

Good case cooling as mentioned above is a bonus.. even something simple like an 80mm intake and 80mm exhaust will work wonders!

Just for clarification : is it a slot or socket Celeron? Also, is it 400MHz in its default or overclocked state?

he said he has not overclocked it yet

and are you sure about these temps?
when i setup MBM5 it said my CPU temp was 115C (which would fry the chip) but when i selected the correct sensors (thanks newbie doo) that 115C turned into 27C

That's where my socket 370 was... actually a few degrees warmer still. This was in an old MB with stock HSF. When I dropped it into my Abit board for testing (with thermal paste, Gladiator, and Delta) it dropped about 15-20C. If yours is a socket also, it probably has the same little heatsink. The new ones (HSFs) aren't overly expensive and really do help out.

my processor is the socket type celeron, and i have two case fans (exhaust, and intake), the case temp is about 30 degrees c. which i didnt think was so bad.

I think either my heatsink has had it, or its installed wrongly, i am running my CPU at this very minute at about 59 degrees, and it is hot, but its stable, that is before overclocking by the way.

I think a new heatsink for me then :-)

Also, i was playing around with overclocking earlier, and found that at 499 mhz it was about 4 degrees hotter, but for some reason if i tried to boot higher then 499 mhz it would not let me and go back to being 400 mhz in the bios, why is this?

And thanks for your help so far :-)

Before you do anything else take your HSF [heatsinkfan] off and see what kind of thermal paste you have if you none or a one of trhe sticky pads then clean everything off with nail polish remover and then go to radioshack and get some thermal compound to get your temps down, another thing unles your ambient temps are around 29C then 30C for your system temp is still a little high, you have some kind of problem for your CPU to be running this hot and this problem needs to be adressed before you think about overclocking or just even running yopur PC. The reason it wont go beyond 499 is probably the heat issue but you may have to raise your CV [corevoltage] to your CPU but at this time DO NOT DO IT! until you can get your CPU temps down. Once you get it cool we will be more then happy to help you out with whatever you may need.

From my experience, above 500 from a Celeron 400 really boils down to luck and use of extreme cooling methods (peltier, water) You're about at the limit when it comes to the Mendocino core.

My recent experience shows otherwise here. I've posted this before (please forgive the redundancy): I took my old Celeron 400 (from my son's system, which was reporting 56C, BTW, and running as fine a the POS always did), and bumped it as far as 576 (96FSB). There were a couple of intermittent WinME errors at this speed, but no crashes. 558 (93FSB) proved to be at least short-term stable.

Granted, I didn't long-term test this since I only had one night to play with it, but it does show that there is a *potential 50% gain left in this old girl with air cooling. I did this with the system (and the HSF) in the sig.

Forgot to add that CPU temp was around 37C load.

i just bought and installed a new heat sink, that is made for the new 800 celeron's and its at 45 degrees now, but it wont go any lower.

Stupid thing, i hope it fries in hell!!!!

What brand heat sink? And did you re-use the intel fan or get one with the HS?

Oh yeah, like everyone else says, don't forget the thermal paste! :)

its a new fan and all

a coolermaster or something, i got it from my local pc shop.

If you can take it back to the store, for about the same amount of money you can get a good all copper HSF that will cool much better then the Coolermaster i had one and with my duct i was able to push my CPU but when i upgraded to the Gladiator i was able to go a little higher because of the cooler temps I paid the same amount for my coolermaster as i did for the Gladiator.

While I agree that Coolermaster's aren't the greatest, I was stuck in a similar predicament to Dat and had to buy one...and am actually still using it

I immediately replaced the stock fan and have 5 additional case fans but its not a bad HS

When I bought my cele 566 i kinda ran out $$$ and was hoping for that miracle chip that just runs nice and cool right out of the box....well i couldn't run it over 85Mhz FSB with any of my nice generic HSF combos and I was cooking my PCI devices with a 1/2 divider so I had to buy a coolermaster b/c it was the best thing i could find.....I live in Louisiana....not a huge computer market here

cost me 12 bucks and running at 100 FSB with it right now and my radio shack thermal paste
