View Full Version : Raid 0 and maybe 1
Would it be unwise to create a stripe set with a disk that holds the os already (and other very important files)?
Also, I will be using the 2 sata ports for this. Can I run IDE raid in the sata raid as well, maybe use the the ide channel as the mirror for the sata?
I will be using the via controller on a p4p800d
Thanks for any input

You'll have to create the array with two fresh drives, which will format your harddrives. What you can do is use a hdd image program like Norton Ghost to copy the image of your current harddrive to another harddrive, then create the array, then use Ghost to copy the image back onto the now newly formed array.

What do you mean IDE raid IN the sata raid?
Which drives are you looking to use for your raid setup? Are they IDE or SATA? You can use IDE drives on the SATA controller but you'd need a IDE->SATA converter for each IDE harddrive, which usually costs around $20 each. Both the harddrives used for the raid setup (0 or 1) will need to be on the same controller.
The drives in use now are sata drives.
Can I use the sata for raid 0 and use ide drives for raid 1 (mirror the sata drives)

no, has to be on the same controller, either raid 0 or 1 unless you want to look into the other types of raid

Yes you can configure your drives that way but your Raid-1 (mirror) won't mirror your Raid-0, that being said, your "mirrored" Raid array will "mirror" what is being wrote to "1" of those drives also too the other one in the array. So your Raid-1 Pata (eide) drives will have the identical data on each when actually writing to only one of them.
If you want to "mirror" or duplicate your Sata-Raid-0 array then you will have to use a 3rd party imaging software and if you choose to do this then you should see which one will work the best.
Thanks for the info. I would like to use Raid 0 on my sata drives. These drives are already in use. Would I be better off rebuilding or is it safe to go to raid 0 with my exsisting drives intact?
Thanks

I'm almost certain you would lose all data going to Raid 0. You may want to put everything on another drive temp. I may have been wrong before also, At least with my board, I believe (not 100% sure) One can run a Raid 0 off the onboard Promise and then attach 1 Sata as a "security-Raid1" drive to duplicate the Raid 0 drives but I'm not entirely sure as to this? I just started messin around again because I had a hdd drive failure on Raid 0 that was only 6 wks.old! I've been screwing around with my board all night trying to setup a Promise Raid 0 w/P-ata's but XP can't see it???? Looks great in the Bios & Promise utility though. Well good luck:D

Well, I finally got that FT378 to work. Seems I had a diskette w/old drivers that was at fault:eek: I used the later set of the Asus sight and she took right off!:D . When I get my rmaed Seagate, I'll be trying Promises' 0+1 setup and report back:)
