I got a 700 Celeron, put it in my ms-6309 motherboard. Cleared cmos. Powered on and smoke came outta my computer! I quickly turned it off and looked around and at the processor and everything looks normal.
I tried again, no smoke, but now my system wont turn on, my mobo leds turn on so I geuss its ok. Do you think its the cpu?
Has this happened to anyone before.?

hows the power supply?

Take the processor out and look for any strange marks on it. It may represent a dead CPU
Smoke, well thats not a good sign.
If something was producing smoke I would think it would show a burn mark.
Look around carefully with good lighting.

u might need to take off the HSF unit to look at the core

if you released the magic smoke from the cpu it wont work anymore , once that stuff goes byebye they arent much good anymore, lol coulda been a ram module or a regulator or a mosfet

if you didnt overclock it, return it to intel

One thing I want to know is how can the tell if you did Overclock the CPU? I have heard place say if you overclock your system your warranty is void. Well how do they know? For all they know your board could have been fried via lightning

i dont think they can tell

umm wtf?!
Now my system is running using the smoky Celeron. I kept trying and now it works.
I keep crashing in windows but I dont think it has anything to do with the cpu(its not overclocked). Do you?
Thx guys

thx for fast replies
Well those are good temps so I guess you got the heatsink on right :)

i would still try to find out where that explosion came from
Its possible he did not have the heatsink on well and the cpu got hot enough to make the grease smoke or something.
But yes a thorough inspection of the motherboard and cards would be a good idea.

I've done a total inspection and don't see any physical damage.
The comp wouldn't start a bunch of times, and then i realized that I had moved the heatsink a little so it didnt touch a capacitor beside it and it started.
The smoke, i think i agree with Placid about the grease. Though I just wish someone could tell me they've seen it happen before.
Thx a bunch
I have done it before myself :(
Never saw smoke but smelled something burning.
The cpu was fine thou.

you didnt find any scorch marks?
Zuck Gou :)
07-31-01, 01:42 AM
None at all.
It had to have been the grease. Now I'm worried it's overclocking potential(like 700's even have any :) ) Is gone. Ill find that out tomorrow.

Well of course I couldn't wait, but good news.
My 700 does 1ghz(10.5x95FSB) at 1.75v. Lets hope she doesnt die on me.
Zuck,
Something similiar happened to me a few weeks ago, believe it or not One stick of Mosel Vitelic RAM actualy caught on fire in my pc, apparently the OEM manufacturer did a poor job making this one stick of ram. At the time All my components were at default values, and when I smelled smoke the system started beeeping.....warning warning will robininson..... Anyway I shut down fast and low and behold the ram was glowing redish and smoking.
Anyway maybe visually inspect your ram if you are trying to resolve what was smoking in your system.....I have never heard about RAM catching on fire before lol.......but there's always a first for everything I suppose.
(Luckily only the ram was destroyed and nothing else, so I guess I was lucky)

Even if you did, return it to Intel. When my Bh6 'Popped' a MOSfet and took my Celly 566 with it, I returned it and they sent me a nicer cC0 stepping one. It had lived the whole of it's life at 850, and Intel still swapped it for a newer model...
If it's not working properly at default speed, then something's wrong in your case... Have you got another (known good) CPU, DIMM, etc. you can use to test the mobo, to see if it's the mobo, RAM, or whatever that's causing the instabilty
If the Sink weren't seated properly then you may have still damaged the CPU, and it's only a matter of time before it dies. If you think the CPU's damaged, contact Intel, tell them that PC refused to boot a few times, and that now it's stopped working properly. It's best to get a new one before the warranty runs out, as opposed to it dying the day after, and then you've gotta fork out more cash.
BTW, tell the tech on the phone, everything you've done to try to get the CPU working/prove it is the CPU that's damaged, but don't mention Overclocking or Slockets (if you have one).
Oh, and if you send it back, ensure it's virgin clean.

The RAM chips might have got hot enough to combust those annoying warranty/Identification stickers that they're SO fond of putting on...

Bah the o/c wasn't stable, but that isn't necessarily because of the smoke. 700's are crap.
Anyways I formatted and it seems to running fine at default. I'll keep this thread updated.

If i call Intel, do you think I should say it doesn't work or that it works but is causing errors etc.
I've never called Intel on a warranty so your opinions are better than mine.

Im getting random restarts, and no games will start. Shortly after opening an app it will freeze or restart.
Maybe the PSU?
Something is definately wrong.

Thats what i'm thinking you may take it apart and give it a good looking through use a magnifying glass if you have one, one thing is obvious if you had smoke then you do have something burnt and it is causing you problems and you do need to find it, after the PSU take your MB out and look at the backside of it to make sure nothing looks cooked back there. If it was your thermal compound that cooked you should have been able to see disscoloration as well as a bad smell coming from it. All i can say is keep looking the clues are there its just going to be a little tricky to find.

There was definately a bad smell from the burning. I thought it was burnt silicon but now im thinking(and hoping) it was burning grease.
Does burning silicon create a bad smell? ( heheh )
I've taken a good look at everything and it all looks normal. >:(

Well I found a tiny scorch mark on the mobo so thats my problem. I didnt know that mobos could be scorched and still run.
Taking it back tomorrow. Thank god for warranty.

Have you checked to see if it was a bug? Ie, like a cockroach, or a moth, etc. I've seem them produce smoke :)

Uh oh. Sounds like the video card, possibly. Do you have another old card handy you can switch it out with to tell?

Krk, Im hoping thats its just the mobo and not the vid card with it.
We'll see in 2 weeks when I get a new board.
