What is the difference between the two CPUs?

Xeons have a lot more cache in them. Xeon's are only really useful on servers and high end workstations.

Xeons also work pretty hot :D Intell is trying to sell more of them too, seen ads of xeon in the paper.......as a multimedia chip
In addition to HUGE full-speed L2 caches (anywhere from the standard 256K to 2MB) PII and PIII xeons are also designed for up to 8 way SMP. (You can buy really really expensive motherboards and stick 8 processors in them. Regular PII and PIII are restricted to 2 way SMP. I'm eyeballing a quad system right now, but have no cash to pay for all that cache)
Xeon processors packages are called Slot 2. They look like the early SECC cartriages except twice as tall (the slot connector is different so you can't accidentally plug a xeon proc into a regular slot 1 mobo or vice versa) and have heatsinks that would put some Alpha Slot1 heatsinks to shame.

yah from what i read the heat sinks they are mini windtunnels, and they can get a little noisy but from i hear you want a Xeon if your a rich gamer :)

My friend is running a PIII 700MHZ XEON with 2MB of L2 cache all I have to say is holy gumballs. His 700 xeon rapes the 1 GHZ PIII and he hasn't even overclocked his processor. That fat cache is defaintly worth a looking into. I am not 100% sure you can even successfully overclock a XEON that far but it doesn't need to be. I wish I had a 700 with 2mb of cache

who doesnt
but then again who has $3000 for JUST a processor?
what intel NEEDS to do is make the xeon a CONSUMER LEVEL processor, and that will put AMD to shame
i can see the headlines now....
P3 Xeon 700 Beats 1.33 Athalon
ohhhh yesss :)

on pricewatch p2 xeons with 1mb are about 40$ and quad boards are 200 (at least the last time i checked)

Look at the quad board which is being sold for $200. It is lobotomized and would require a lot more money just to become functional. Namely, it requires a memory card (maybe $75-100 on ebay), 6 voltage regulator modules (for 4 processors) - $25 each on ebay, and EDO (!!!) RAM - which is very very expensive, especially in large module sizes (128MB or so)
The next boards which are being sold are in the neighborhood of $600 but don't require buying all the accessories to be functional.
(Man, if the $200 board was complete, I would ebay a kidney for the cash. Wait a minute - a kidney can fetch more then $200 - maybe even $600...hmmm....)

Well, it depends on the Xeon your talking about. Yes, the larger cache xeons support all those things and perform quite well, but I believe there is also a 256K cache PIII xeon that is no different in terms of performance than a regular PIII of the same speed. So, if your gonna go Xeon and pay the extra make sure you get the good ones with the fat cache. Of course the cache will cost you cash as well.
Speaking of Xeons have you seen the P4 Xeons. The main difference between them and the regular P4 is they come in a 603 pin socket and support dual smp configurations. I hear there will be a 2.0Ghz version released pretty soon.
