View Full Version : Too many numbers!!!

OK.. I know pretty much what all the numbers mean (FSB, CPU speed etc)... but I'm not sure how far I can push them before I end up a smoke and a sudden drop in performance.
I have a Intel P3 650 and 133Mhz RAM (Special offer was cheaper than 100Mhz so I figured why the hell not) and my current idea is to clock my system to 667 @ 133Mhz. The RAM won't mind, nor will the motherboard and the CPU won't mind going from 650 -> 667....

Question is... can I change the bus from 100-133Mhz without getting a box of carbon??

Any advice and/or suggestions welcome :)
Thanks, Dan

PS If you think I'm talking rubbish and should crawl back under the table... please let me know so I don't do it again ;)

that would give you a little performance boost but why not go higher

crawl back under the table you idiot ??? just kidding lol, and just for your information changing from 100 to 133 mhz bus will give you a heck of a lot more than 667mhz, for example if i take my p3 600 from100-133 i go from 600-800mhz, so no i dont know if it will be easy to get your cpu to do that, however please post more stats of your computer, and we can hekp you more, for examplke your motherboard must support 133mhz bus...i suggest moving up in small units like going from 100 to 105-112-118-124-133 like that, going straight to 133 probly wont work the first time...READ THE TUTORIALS, these can help a lot, and look at the Beggineers guide section on overclocking, it helped me a lot

Overclock it and see how far it will go all you will do is make your PC faster the only way to really hurt it is if you get crazy with your CV [over 2.00] or get it too hot other then that things may not work rite but you wont kill anything if your PC gets unstable clock it back down as far as your FSB you have to remember that your CPU has a multiplier and you multiply this to your FSB and this will be your MHZ of your CPU so if you want to run your memory at 133 then you will be running your PC faster then 667, unless your CPU's default is 133 to begin with. At this point it may be good if you read through the tips section as there is a little more to overclocking then raisng CV and FSB and theres to much info for me to put down in 1 post but please dont be afraid to ask any questions that you may have.

Whats the multipiler clock on that P3 of yours?
This is how you figure the speed of your overclock
M = Multiplier clock
F = Front Side Bus
M * F = Mhz of the system give or take anywhere from 1 mhz to 3

what you are trying to do is near impossible with an intel chip
the CPU multiplier is locked
so you can just mess with the FSB and if you kick it upto 133, that will multiply the FSB x the LOCKED CPU mulitplier
sorry pal

Ahhh crap yeah... I knew there was something I forgotten... multiplier lock.... there's no way round that is there?

Not really, all you can do is increase the front side bus to get your rocket speed !

Good luck

BTW, welcome to the forums (if you haven't been told already !)

Hi RandomDan,
I've the same chip of yours, a P/// 650 slot1 (Fsb100 & Multiplier 6.5x), and tomorrow i try to OC it at 865Mhz, rising Fsb to 133Mhz, on the new Mobo, coz the other one, an old Asus P2B, dosn't give it the right voltage of 1.65v.

I hope early to give you more info :-)

Sorry, I'll do it today in the afternoon :-)
