View Full Version : When
when are manufacturers gonna make VGA cards
upgradeable
in memory, like motherboards ?
Probably not again for quite a while. I would imagine that the cost would be quite prohibitive, for the end user especially. I remember a few years back, quite a few video cards had upgradeable memory. I have a Matrox Millenium 2 that has 4 megs stock, but there were upgrade slots that would raise the total to 16.
hmm didnt know that
i was just throwing that out there
cool to find that out lol

probably never, they can make more money from you by making you buy new cards instead of just upgrading, and if you were to be able to upgrade a ti4200 to 256 mbs of ram it would be pointless since the ti4200 would not be powerful enough to utilize it.
Even a 9800 xt if possible to upgrade to something like 512mbs would be pointless, by the time games utilize that much memory the rest of the card will be outdated and time to by a new one anyway.

Someone called and asked them the same question. While it would be nice to be able to do this, It really wouldnt make much sense. I would dissagree though on memory upgrading. That would be great and could be possible. As for the core, There are More things to consider in that aera. #1 would be, While you could upgrade the core, What would be the point? Its transistors that count also. Also all the Pods, Chips, And all the other stuff on the board that is usually upgraded when the card companies release a new card.
So, unless you Talking about being able to uopgrade The GPU and Mem, and the board, We are right back to, Just buy the next card. It would in all likelyhood be cheaper anyway.
But im VERY much in favor of being able to upgrade memory on the cards. That is very doable. And it should have been done long ago i think.

upgrading the videos cards ram may be a good idea but it wont help with performance anyway, todays cards have so much ram already
