I was bored, so I decided to see how far I could push my old skool Gateway G6-266 without having to open up the case. Here is a quick run down on the parts:

Stock Gateway motherboard (manufactured by Intel probably) with AL440LX
Pentium2 266 (4 x 66 = 266)
160MB of "assorted" RAM (some PC100, some PC66, different brands on all three sticks)
New S/U/M/A GeForce2 MX Platinum 32MB SDR
Maxtor 15GB 7200 RPM

I downloaded SoftFSB and NvMax off a Norway site, and 3DMark2000 from MadOnion.com (NOT 3Dmark2001).

Running 3DM2000 with the default speeds, I recieved a score of 2139, with a CPU Mark of 149.

This is where it gets good!!!!

Right now as I am typing this, I am running at 80 MHz FSB, WITH THE STOCK HEATSINK AND NOT A SINGLE FAN ON THE PROC. Yes, that would mean i am running 320 MHz with the only fan in the whole case being the blower in the power supply. And don't forget that my proc is an old unlocked version I believe, so I could probably knock it up to 5 x 72 = 350 MHz and see what happens, because the heatsink is barely warm to the touch. Unfortunately, SoftFSB won't go beyond 80 and the mobo/bios have no adjustment, other than a general 233/266/300/333 overall adjustment, which I believe is the multiplier adjuster.

Now with the GeForce2 MX. I don't know what speeds other people are reaching with their video cards, but this thing is certainly going places. The default core speed is 175, and I was able to reach 230. As for the memory, it has a default speed of 166, and I am running it at 190. I may push it a little more to see what else it can do.

As for stability, I ran 3DMark2000 twice in a row without a single hiccup. The new scores from the overclocked system look like this:
2680 3DMarks (against 2139 no overclock)163 CPU Mark (against 149 no overclock)

I would say that is damn good for not spending any cash at all. Any comments?

Ya those look real nice scores

Nice scores for a system like that. I wouldn't be running that CPU without a single fan though!!! Apply a paper thin layer of thermal grease on the cpu, put a decent heat sink and a fan on top, and you are rolling.

good scores, for the system... if you can plop that cpu in another case/motherboard, you would probably go higher... no guarantees.

The case is pretty big actually, it is a mid-tower and there is room for a 80mm fan in the back, and I think there is room for another one in the front. As for heatsinks, a lot of the ones I see on the net are for SECC2 which is no good for me, and the few SECC1 type coolers cost like $40, and they're just cheap cast aluminum. I have practically no extra spending money (you know how it is when your 18)....I don't like to take freebies, but if anyone has parts that they don't need or want, I'd be more than happy to take them and fool around.

And Intel/Gateway have given me no help at all regarding the technical specs on my motherboard. Gateway sends me to a techdoc on their website that has nothing pertinent at all, and Intel refers me to Gateway when I ask the same question  I know that the board is an Intel AL440LX. The writing on the PLL is scratched off and Gateway won't tell me what brand and type it is and the Intel mobo manual doesn't specify either.....

uhoh...the toilet is overflowing again, time for me to go check it out....

Can you check your RAM timing? my card is 6ns so its theoretical max is 166Mhz but im at 200Mhz.. any higher and i get colorful bits everywhere. I wouldnt trust that heatsink on the MX... i have a CoolerMater heatsink (rated to 1.2Ghz Athlons, but now i got a even better fan) and even that gets warm to touch. Core is 235Mhz (250Mhz works but gets all kind of banding).

Oh im talking the MX here..not CPU.

OK i cracked open my case and checked the writing on the RAM chips....Hyundai chips, and it says "TC-6" which I am guessing indicates 6 ns timing. As for the cooling aspect, right now it is in a small, air conditioned room held at about 72-74 degrees F and the mem chips are slightly warm when I touch them after running 3DMark2000 a couple of times. All I did was put the setting in NvMax at the last setting where it says "possibly unstable", then I ran 3DMark2000, came back and put the settings up a little higher, and continued that process until at 230/230 3DMark stopped running halfway through. So to be on the safe side, I run it at 210/210 for my games (mainly CS, so the HL engine probably doesn't stress the GF2MX as much as Deus Ex or Q3 might). I don't know what else to say...i'll be happy to try to answer any questions you might have.

Your like mi. I have random generic memory in my box too.

That looks real good, for what you got.
