I was bored, so I decided to see how far I could push my old skool Gateway G6-266 without having to open up the case. Here is a quick run down on the parts:
Stock Gateway motherboard (manufactured by Intel probably) with AL440LX
Pentium2 266 (4 x 66 = 266)
160MB of "assorted" RAM (some PC100, some PC66, different brands on all three sticks)
New S/U/M/A GeForce2 MX Platinum 32MB SDR
Maxtor 15GB 7200 RPM
I downloaded SoftFSB and NvMax off a Norway site, and 3DMark2000 from MadOnion.com (NOT 3Dmark2001).
Running 3DM2000 with the default speeds, I recieved a score of 2139, with a CPU Mark of 149.
This is where it gets good!!!!
Right now as I am typing this, I am running at 80 MHz FSB, WITH THE STOCK HEATSINK AND NOT A SINGLE FAN ON THE PROC. Yes, that would mean i am running 320 MHz with the only fan in the whole case being the blower in the power supply. And don't forget that my proc is an old unlocked version I believe, so I could probably knock it up to 5 x 72 = 350 MHz and see what happens, because the heatsink is barely warm to the touch. Unfortunately, SoftFSB won't go beyond 80 and the mobo/bios have no adjustment, other than a general 233/266/300/333 overall adjustment, which I believe is the multiplier adjuster.
Now with the GeForce2 MX. I don't know what speeds other people are reaching with their video cards, but this thing is certainly going places. The default core speed is 175, and I was able to reach 230. As for the memory, it has a default speed of 166, and I am running it at 190. I may push it a little more to see what else it can do.
As for stability, I ran 3DMark2000 twice in a row without a single hiccup. The new scores from the overclocked system look like this:
2680 3DMarks (against 2139 no overclock)163 CPU Mark (against 149 no overclock)
I would say that is damn good for not spending any cash at all. Any comments?
