I know that there are mixed feelings about these pumps, but I bought one just to see if i would get lucky. (I can always send it back to petsmart.com free of charge :) ). I put the pump in a loop with itself and a small reservior. Although I didn't see any air in the tubes after a while, the pump still gets hot, vibrates, and makes a rattling noise. I submerged the pump completely in water, and got the same results (along with making a big mess!). Could there still be air in this pump? The rattling sound could be bearable I think, but the vibrations just wouldn't mix well with a full tower case. I suppose I'll try sealing it tomorrow.

Thanks,
dwango

Well, no luck. I bought some gasket stuff and sealed the face, but it still got awfully hot and made the same noise. I spent about an hour peeling the gasket off so I can send it back to petsmart. Anyone have a suggestion for a fairly quiet pump for use with a DD maze2 + cooling cube?

it depends on what you're looking for. I think an eheim 1048 or a Maxijet 1200 would be a good bet. I got my maxijet from premiumaquatics.com and am happy with it as a submerged pump. It has a 295gph rating and seems to cool much better than my my old Rio 180.

If you submerged the pump and it was hot and noisy, return it. You got a bum pump. It should be quiet and only slightly warm, without any airflow over it when running inline.

Colin, does yours vibrate alot? I mean, I know it's a pump, but it'll be really loud in a metal case (if the vibrations are normal) unless i put like a full size towel under it to dampen the vibrations. Maybe I'll try another Mag7.
