View Full Version : Pentium 2 lapping?
I feel weird posting this in all the emptiness. Bet the place is full again by Sunday night!!
Anyhoo I just dug out an old P2-333 (unlocked!) and, after laughing at the puny heatsink took a look at the SECC cartridge it was in. It's gotta be a quarter inche thick poorly machined metal. I don't want to take off the case entirely; this bad boy needs to stay locked in it's slot when installed.
So-should I lap the proc cartridge? It could definately use the help with temps, but will this matter? Will it hurt the processor inside? Do I have to lap the Entire Thing?
My goal for this is a tiny server box running 24\7-every little bit helps.
</edit> Hey it's not empty! I'm, just to dumb to figure out the new forums!!:D

Well, IMO I dont think it is reall worth it to lap. I mean lapped or not lapped you will prolly end up getting about 75MHz tops oout of that chip. But if you have a lot of time on your hands, and are really bored, then I dont see any harm :)
75mhz would be perfect. See, since it is unlocked I run it at as high an FSB as possible- 155, but I can only do 3 x 155=465 and that is not enough. 3.5 x 155 = 542 is where I would like to get it, but it heats up and dies in a few minutes.
Mybae I should just settle for 465mhz and call it a day? If only there was a 3.2 multiplier, or my board had a 153 FSB I'd be set!!

Ummm...
How can a pentium 2 run @ 155 FSB?
I could be mistaken but I thought pentium 2's ran @ 66/100 FSB.
My board has a max of 83 FSB.
Anyways...
Goodluck O/Cing
You are right Jim_bobster. It is supposed to use a 66mhz bus. However, this particular little bad boy is not bus locked or multiplier locked, so I can crank the FSB up as high as it will go and then adjust the multiplier until final speed is ~ 450.
I cracked off the case off of it after all and am almost done sanding it. I'll put it back together and then tell y'all if it made a difference. Hopefully it'll help enough to get to 542, although that would be really lucky.

That's amazing that you can run a pentium 2 @ 155 FSB.
I put a GlobalWin VOS-32 on a p2-266 for my sister and it will do 4*75 (300) stable. That's it!!! Though I didn't put much effort into cooling nor did I check if it was multiplier unlocked. Plus my board will do 83 FSB max.
What board do you have?
Also, if you decase it let me know if you are happy with the results. I am wary to do that. Though, when it isn't fast enough for her I'll probably take another crack at O/Cing it.
Happy Clocking to 540+!!!
OK- I decased it, sanded the entire case surface till its like 1/8 of an inch thick- the case will now bend under finger pressure!- and reassembled.
I got 3 degrees C bonus, but no extra speed. Damn thing tops out at 495 now. That's when I remember the off-die cache, and that P2 style cache chips crap out at 225 or so. So I've settled on 3 x 155 after all.
Jim_bobster, I have a relatively crappy Soyo SY-6VBA motherboard. Apollo Pro 133 chipset. Sounds like your motherboard is an LX chipset, those only went to 83. Try the multiplier dude, it won't hurt nothing. If it ain't unlocked, it'll just stay where it was locked at.
Go ahead and crack off the case BTW, it was easy. If I didn't have to put it back on, I might have attained my goal. Check this out-

I can overclock my pII 450 to 501 Mhz but if I try to do 599 Mhz it locks up hard because the lack of power.... I don't know were the cpu voltage jumper is I have a Acer v66xa motherboard but it's all going to be changed.
599 would be really cool, FerrariF50. I did some research and found out that the P2 core itself was good for 600 mhz or so with great cooling, but the off-die cache they used was only good to 225mhz (running at 1/2 clock speed) so Most p2s die at 500 mhz.
Mine does 550 with the cache disabled! And runs slower than molasses.
Hey you're from Norwalk?? I'm from Danbury originally. Huskies!! heh

yup yup I live in norwalk it cost alot to live here now but I guess it's thats normal....... well all the overclocking really means nothing to me now because in 2 weeks from now I will be ordering a amd system that I'm building and so this one is going to go to my mom.

Dude that is why I moved! heh. I went from danbury to frickin Ridgefield for 8 yrs, then moved to Denver so I can keep some of my paycheck!! I miss the forest tho.
If you are getting a new one, you can do all kinds of funky stuff to the P2 system and not sweat it! Mom may not like a jacked-up system tho:D

I remember something about those P2 slugs and their L2 cache... When I had one and was putting some extra cooling to it (ORB), I dug the net for the case removal instructions. The place I found them from said there was 2 kinds of heatplates on the CPU. The lousier plate didn't recessions that touch the L2 cache chips. Mine had :)
Just a shame the orb didn't like to stay tightly attached to the heatplate, it might have gone to 466 with L2 cache enabled. It stayed at 399, a huge improvement over the original 350.
Atleast my P2 accepted lower multipliers. I tried higher multis too, but they were locked.
