We are setting up a wireless network at work for testing purposes. We are using Linksys USB Network Adapters.

The software that came with it can monitor signal strength and link quality, but the software only works on Windows 2000. Windows XP automatically installs the adapter and has its own (very limited) display of signal strength. Apparently, Linksys won't let you install their software on Windows XP for this reason.

Is there any other software out there (preferably free) that can monitor the strength and quality of a wireless connection?

Netstumbler (http://netstumbler.com/) is good for that. It may not work depending on your card, but if you have a Prism chipset (like most NICs do) then you should have no problem.

Personally, I would look at PCMCIA (or PCI) WLAN NICs instead of USB. I don't trust USB for network connections of any kind.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it wasn't my decision on which hardware to get, so we have to settle with USB. I guess the decision was made so we would be emulating the least reliable setup that our customers might have
