View Full Version : how to cool the water?

I overclock my 9800xt and 3.2 p4
on air, got my system stable at 225 fsb (16x multiplier)and 490/405
with water, system is only stable at 220 fsb and 465/390
the main difference is that on Air, side panel was off and with water side panel is on.
with the computer case all closed up(i do have 4 80mm fans running) the water inside the case gets hot and just circulates thru system.
so how does this cool anything?
if i take side panel off, i can do same settings as Air but no higher
i like how quiet watercooling is, but how is it suppose to cool anything if the water is hot from being in a closed up case?
cpu temp under load is 45 C
case temp is 38 c
at idle both are 30 c
vid card
temps get real high 55C at idle and i am guessing over 70C after about 10 minutes of gaming w/side panel on, cause the display locks up and i have to reboot
any ideas out there? btw its an external water cooling system with 1/4 in tubing and has a cpu block and gpu block in series.
works fine with no overclocks and is very quiet, but i cant seem to get my overclocks to where they can go with case closed...rubs head

Are you using one of the external "kits". If so, which one?
I myself have not used one, but word on the "street" is most of the kits perform no better then higher end air....only quieter.
This may be your problem
...Does it have a radiator?
Aside from what's been asked before, are you really using 1/4" tubing? That's got to be a real flow killer. If we're going to help we need to know all the various components, make, model, shoe size, etc.

corsair hydrocool ex w/koolance gpu block
Well I went and checked out your setup. with those 1/4" barbs coming off the ex. system your kind of limited there. I would definately look at getting a better waterblock.

I beleve you shoudl be fine with that cooling, one thing you should try is having a fan blow at your motherboard where the one from the heatsink and fan would have been. Its very possible that a chip is not being cooled that was when you were aircooling from the stray air.
I know I can point a fan in at my computer and drop the temps a little and who knows, maybe even up o/c

Do you have a fan on your radiator? Does the fan on your radiator also remove or intake air from the case?
It sounds like your GPU waterblock is mounted badly and needs remounted. I wouldn't think your GPU temps should be that much worse.

i never removed shim on xt gpu...think i should?
is there a how to somewhere?
i definately think its a vid card overheating problem with case closed...
any ideas on troubleshooting

Yes you should remove the shim... There is a guide on OC.com here:

Very poor contact at the TIM joint on your GPU is causing the video problems.
You might also get better performance if you remove that 3dmark link from your sig as it conflicts with the forum sig rules. ;)

solved the lock up proplem, had to do w/zonealarm locking my system due to intrusions and couldnt tell due to rebooting my system everytime.
now if i just could get higher overclocks,lol...
think the reason i cant overclock higher than 225 stable fsb is all memory issue. i run ocz pc3200 limited edition platinum, bah i will post question in diff forum:)
thanks for the replies...stupid software problem....thank god was not hardware
voodoothenoob,
Glad to see you here too. I totally tossed zonealarm out the door. More grief than what it's worth for help.
Anyways, If you want to spent more money, like who does, you can upgrade the quick-disconnect fittings from the back of the HydroCool to 3/8" line to a 3/8" cold-block. Why, because the HydroCool uses 3/8" tubing inside it's case.
Rummers have it that this could be the next upgrade to the EX to become the FX unit for more flow and handle temps nearing 300Watts of heat. Although, this could be out in the Fall or early Winter.
Current HydroCooler's can be upgraded with the add-on kit too.
However, if you can't wait, you can get the quick-disconnects from U.S. Platics, order some 3/8" tubing and get a 3/8" Danger Den RBX micro-channel block. Then you'll be the FX model before they are even offered.
The nice thing about the HydrcoCool (HC) it is very mod'able if you put some thought into it.

Hey voodoothenoob I'm Runing a Koolance. It on my Abit-max-3 mobo The cpu is a 2.80e runing at 3.75g. The Asus is a 9800xt card is runing a Cool-Matic ATi Cooler is on a Thermaltake Aquarius II liquid cooling setup. Hey Guys look for the The Cool-Matic ATi was developed specially for Asua 9800xt graphic cards and cools not only the GPU also the RAM..... It work good.
