Hi. I have a siemens 2port router which I no longer need since the other comp is no longer in the house but I have a question. It doesn't have a built-in firewall, but am I still more safe if I connect through the router than without it and straight through teh cable modem?
Actually the router by nature is a firewall. Thats what NAT does. So yes, you would be better off with the router. ;)

your only better off if NAT is actually enabled in the router and configured properly :)

Well if its routing, than its setup. For the most part.
