View Full Version : Lapping and applying thermal grease?

OK I just got some thermal grease to apply to my HSF, and I also decided I would lap it some. To my dismay, all that it did was make my temps only 2 degrees Celcius less than before. :(

I am using a Volcano II HSF with some Antec thermal grease on a Duron 800 Mhz. I don't have any case fans as of yet, but I will soon, possibly later today. The temp of my CPU just sitting here typing this message is 57 C. It was originally about 59-60 C. I am assuming I might have done something wrong with lapping my HSF and applying the thermal grease. With the lapping I used some sandpaper, the lightest stuff I could find at the nearest Sears hardware store. How long should I have done the lapping for? I probably rubbed the bottom of the HSF for a good 2-3 minutes.

Also, what is the best way to apply the thermal grease? I had some trouble getting a good thin layer on the CPU core, but I finally got the smoothest layer I could, and I used just a small plastic bag over my finger to do so. That is probably the wrong way to go. :( Can anyone help me with this please?

P.S.--This is with my case on, I have no case fans yet. If I take the case off and put my brother's fan he uses in his room to sleep at night at the side of the case, it drops the temperature like 8-9 degrees C.

First I've the same chip and sink so maybe I can help.

Second a bunch of questions: What board and case do you have? What perepherals are in the system? Are you overclocking? What is your voltage? Where do you live? What is the ambient temp in the room with the computer? Have you modded your case? Have you rounded your cables? Could you post a picture of your system with the door off? Can you lend me $8 until next weeK? (sorry, felt compelled to do that)

My chip is overclocked to 1053mhz at 1.87v. My temps are 39c idle up to 50c under prolonged, heavy load. I put a simple duct on my case door right over the cpu and it lowered my load temp by 5c. I'm gonna try to post a picture for you, I'm not sure if I know the new system well enough yet but ...

That was the outside picture. I know it isn't much help from that angle. The tube is a plastic tube that is used in making home made car speaker boxes. It is lined up right over the cpu fan. Here's the other side of the door. Can anyone tell me how to post more than one photo per reply?
