I find that I usually have to take several shots, before I get a good one.

Do digital cameras offer manual zoom? The biggest peeve I have with my Digital(an old 600pixel Olympus) is that it WILL NOT take pictures of stuff moving, stupid zoom!!!!!!!!!
I mean, at all, like, you have to be perfectly still.
sorry to point out the blatent obvious but it depends on your camera, generaly they make digital cameras to do range or close up, some are more expensive and can do both, if you camera has a macromode, like a little flower button, press it and itll setup focus to take a picture as close as possible.
some digital cameras have autosetup if you hold the shutter button half way down they will try and set it up theirself.
ive got a minolta dimage z1 and it takes pics like this...
when auto focusing on the middle of the cpu.

I'm not trying to be smart here or anything, but try reading the manual on how to work the macro mode, also look at the spec sheet in the manual to find the minimum focus distance
