I have a maxtor 160GB, that kinda died on me after I tried installing a 20WD with the power on. I know for sure my 20GB WD fried cause I saw smoke come out of it,lol (banging head on desk). Am such a noob. But now my 160 Maxtor is not recognized. Does that mean I fried both??

Use maxtor's hdd software to check. It's called powermax and is located in the sticky above "hdd diagnostics"

(but yeah, sounds like it's dead. Is the hdd powered? Can you feel the insides still moving? Does it show in the bios? disk manager?)

Why did you do that with the comp powered on?

No use talking about it and making himself sound foolish. He knows not to do it again :)

I've honestly done it before too. I was just too lazy to turn off the computer. lol :)

yes, the hard drive does power on.

yes i did learn my lesson on plugging things on while the power is on. I did it out of frustration, my harddrive had a virus, and corrupted explorer, so when i booted windows all i had was the background with no icons or taskbar, but oh well we have to learn form our mistakes.
