View Full Version : Duron 800 temps really high :(

Here's the specs:

ASUS A7V133 mobo
Duron 800 Mhz
Volcano II HSF w/ Antec thermal grease :\
Voodoo 4 PCI
Soundblaster Live! Value
and a few other things :\

Anyway my temps right now as I am posting this message are 57c! Why is it so high? I don't have any case fans as of yet, only fans are the one on the CPU, the other thing next to the CPU (what is that by the way?), and the fan in the power source. Are these temperatures high for my setup? I want to overclock, but I'm afraid of the temps becoming way too high. :(

Oh by the way I am monitoring the temps using the ASUS PC Probe proggy that came with the mobo.

That does seem high to me. I've the same cpu and sink on an A7V-E board. My oc'd temps top out at 50c under load.

1) Have you tried re-seating the heat sink? Did you lap it at all?

2) You've got a SB LIVE! on an ASUS board with a 686b chipset. That can cause a lot of grief. Some of the solutions to the LIVE! / 686b conflicts have been reported to cause temperature increases in the cpu. If you go here: http://www.viahardware.com/686bfaq.shtm and read the faq maybe that will help.

Other than that I can't think of anything.
Good Luck.

This is to be my first attempt at overclocking, and I did lap the heat sink to the best of my knowledge. I bought the lightest sandpaper that I could and I proceeded to rub the bottom to be as flat as I thought it could possibly be. Then I took some rubbing alcohol and rubbed it clean with a cotton ball. Then I dried it off with a paper towel, and took the thermal paste, put it on the CPU core as thin and as flat as I could get it, and applied the HSF.

I haven't had any problems with SB Live! Value so far working-wise. But as for the CPU temperature increase from it, I have no idea. Maybe I should remove the card and then see how the CPU temps are?

Also, I have not modded my case at all yet. I don't have any case fans inside, but I will get some in a few days. But one thing I did notice was that when I had the case off, and put a house fan next to the case, blowing onto the CPU and anything else around it, it decreased my temperatures by (if I can remember right) about 7-8c. I thought that was pretty good. :) Do you think the lack of case fans is a big problem for me? Once I get those how much temperature decrease can I possibly see?

Did you re-seat the sink? That would be my first place to look based on your info. When you lapped it did you lap it on some kind of glass surface? My first lapping attempt was on some wood that I figured was flat enough but comparing it to my second attempt on glass I noticed a world of difference.

I don't actually have any extra case fans in my system (yet) I'll I've got is a duct to make sure the air put on my cpu is drawn from outside the case where it is usually (stupid heat wave!) cooler. That dropped my temp under load by 5c. If air flow is a problem then rounding your cables may help, probably not much without extra fans but its easy enough to do yourself so it won't cost more than the price of the tape you use to wrap them up with.

Also maybe you should try a different program to read your temps just incase the probe is giving you bad info. Sisoft Sandra available here: http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra has a temp monitor in it.

You've got NO problems with your LIVE card??????? NONE??????? You must be doing something wrong then because you should be suffering horribly with that combination!!!!:D

eobard, I love you man. :) Whereas ASUS Probe says it is 57c, SiSoft Sandra says it is at 47c!! What the hell is going on here??? Which should I believe??? Is there a third proggy that you can tell me so that I can be absolutely sure? This has me astounded that SiSoft Sandra and ASUS PC Probe show a 10c difference!!!

So, the big question is, which one should I believe? SiSoft Sandra or ASUS PC Probe?

Also, eobard, what do you mean by lapping on glass? I had the heatsink on my floor and all I did was rub the bottom with the sandpaper. I'm afraid I have no idea what you are talking about with the glass thing. :p

The reason glass is used to lap a heatsink on is that the surface of the glass is usally flat unlike your floor. the technique is the same however

From my understanding the Asus probe does read a little high

The best bet is to always check your temps in your bios. I would keep the comp on for about an hr or so and see what your temperature is in the bios. That should be close to your idle temp in windows. What kind of hsf are you using btw ? I had the one that came with my processor a while back and my temps where about same as yours. If you need a good hsf goto www.plycon.com they have good hsfs i recommend the gladiator copper hsf or even the global win wbk-38.Don't forget some artic silver thermal paste. What is you'r room ambient temperature because if its high so will your cpu because your blowing hot air not cold air. Any ways gl ,hope I helped a bit.

Thats pretty much what I did my first time. It looked smooth when I was done but it wasn't truely flat. Get yourself a picture frame with a glass sheet in front, put your sand paper on top of the glass and then you'll have a perfectly smooth and level surface under the sandpaper when you sand it.

As for which utility to use for temps I've heard of many people with pc probe having their temps a full 10c above what other programs reported. It never happened to me but it would seem my case is the exception, not the rule. Don't trust the probe if Sandra is showing 10c under it. If you want a third program you can get Motherboard Monitor at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

Good luck.
