I want to reformat my computer and was wondering what will be the way that will clean the hard drive the most. I know that not everything can be erased but this windows install got really gunked up and I learned a tip about defragging to make the drivers load a bit faster.

In terms of cleaning the drive, all formatters are the same. The statement that they don't erase everything means that after some formats, the data is PHYSICALLY still on your harddrive. That is, it can be "un-erased" in certain ways. As to drive usage (writing new data), the system will consider the drive empty as well as after any other format.

So this relates to security, not cleanup. Reformat any way you like.
