I just hooked up a new raptor that came in (a newegg refurb) and I recieve the boot message, "S.M.A.R.T. status is bad," and am told to backup and replace the drive. I haven't had this happen with any hdd before.

Is this indicative of a bad drive (and thus "go and get your rma gear") or is this something that can be adjusted/fixed?

Many thanks. :)

I don't believe SATA drives can support SMART monitoring so I would have to say that your Deskstar may be the culprit :(

My system has just started to display the SMART remark a few times at start up and I am curious how iminent is this hard disk failure? I ahve started up my system at least five times with this SMARt thing and always cross my fingers. It still works though. ANy help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well it says it is the 3rd hdd, and the raptor is the third device listed. Plus, the deskstar is SATA as well. The new raptor seems to work normally other than the error message thus far.

I guess SATA HDD's support SMART monitoring on a BIOS level. All popular hard drive markers provide software that you can use the check your drives. Unfortunately, I do not believe that any of these work with SATA drives. I would try and isolate the drive causing problems and then contact the drive manufacture.

SATA drives aren't supported in DOS and you can't format them in Windows if the Windows installation or important Windows files are on the drive. You can use the Windows XP CD to boot up and partition the drives if you want to install Windows on them.

Windows is not on this drive - nothing is. It's just partioned. Windows won't format it.. I don't get it.

I really appreciate the replies.

What does Windows say when you try to format the drive? Also, can you see the drive in "My Computer"? If so, what happens when you click on it?

try booting to a disk that has windows, get in safe mode with command prompt, then run the chkdsk /p (/p bypasses drives flagged as ok) on your culprit first to see if the drive returns any errors, if so run the chkdsk utility again with either /r or /f, i forget which it is but it will then fix any fixable hard disk errors within its own power of course. I can't stress enough how many drives i have put new life into by doing this. Give it a try.

After I create a new partition, it shows up in 'my computer'.. upon clikcing on it, it prompts to format the drive. I do so, but at the end when the progress bar completes the message appears, "windows was unable to format the drive." Then, it's no longer listed in my computer.

DJ Switch, I'll go ahead and try that now.

Thanks again!
