After reading one of the threads below, I remembered that ATI stated that Radeon GPU supports MAXX technology, basically a dual processor graphics card. Why would ATI implement this technology on the chip if they aren't going to utilize it? Possibly the fact that the Rage Fury MAXX was not that great turned ATI away from the concept. I would really like to see a Radeon MAXX as a gateway to Radeon2. Surely with two Radeons doing gfx processing the speed would be as good as if not better than the GeForce3 and the Image quality would be an additional benefit, and it would probably be slightly less expensive than a GF3, considering current Radeon 64DDR prices are at about $175, and GF3 at twice that. If ATI were to produce such a product, I would purchase one over any current Nvidia offering.

Well, the reason the Radeon supports Maxx technology is becuase, at the time it was being developed, ATI wasn't exactly sure how how many different cards based on the Radeon gpu they were going to market or even how well it would do against Nvidia. They basically left the door open for themselves.
It took some time for the Radeon to really take off so they didn't really get around to developing the Radeon Maxx. Instead they chose to focus on a cheaper version (LE) and a Dual display (VE).
From there they went on to begin development of the R200 and R300 simultaneously. If they were to work on the R-Maxx and R200 then they would fall behind Nvidia again in card releases. By the time they got to R300 development Nvidia would already have released a GF3 MX and a GF3 Ultra. This way they can release the R200 next month and have the R300 ready to go by christmas (or so they hope).
Also, gpu's are already more than fast enough for current games. The real problem graphics card makers are working to remedy are memory bandwith bottlenecks. Dual gpu's wouldn't really allow for that much of an advantage.
Besides all that, Radeon Maxx sales would more than likely take away from R200 sales. ATI is betting alot on the R200 and they more than likely don't want anything to get in it's way, especially one of their own products.

ok thanks for clearing that up...sometimes i get really confused about moves that companies make, like Intel's p3 vs p4 "controversy" Rambus's various retarded moves, Apple's decision to stop licensing the OS.
