View Full Version : South Bridge Cooling

This is something that i tried on my old A7V133. I found that it drops the MoBo temp significantly! I don't remember exacts becuase my A7V133 is now fried(Vcore got screwed), but i think it was a difference of 28C before to 25C after. I figure that this could also improve upon FSB overclocking and all around system stabillity as well because the South bridge happens to be very sensitive to high temps. Infact in one article that I read, they said that the reason why they didn't put the North bridge and South bridge together was becuase the south bridge could not handle the heat of the north bridge and would cause corrupting of data. Now i ask you to think back to the last time that you overclocked your FSB too high. Important windows files got corrupted didn't they? This is the same symptom that was explained by southbridge overheating in the article i read. So i ask, why not cool that little south bridge ? it could get us to new hights :D

I put a killer cooler on my north, and popped a ramsink south, do you think this will help out loads?, when I get it back together ofcourse ;)

well i certanly dont object to any extra cooling, but have you touched your southbridge lately? mos dont get, even warm. i said most, some get pretty hot. mine is luke warm, hehe but i put one on there anyway

even a ram sink will help becuse the temp is already fairly low

dozier768, it is not the amount of heat that matters it is the amount of sensitivity that the south bridge has. For example there is now way that a south bridge could handle the same temps as the north bridge which is why they separate them. So what i'm saying is that even warm to the tuch is too much for these little guys. one more thing it's not like you need a huge cooler on them but it would be advised to put a lapped greeny on there atleast:p remember that these chips handle all harddrive activity and pci cards

i agree, my thought was that its PROBABLY not super important, but every little bit helps,

yes, but the people who it will help most is those without high divisors, i have yet to apply it to my a7a266 but i will once i get my SK-6. If you wana go overboard you could put a heatsink on every chip in your system:rolleyes:

Nah, that's not overboard. Overboard would be putting a TEC on every chip in the system. :)

..but wouldn't it look amazing :)
and BTW I kinda like the idea of putting some blue anodized ramsinks all over the mobo, it'd look pretty good under that blacklight, (since the case is never on anyway) ;)
Just put your fingers on the chips on your motherboard. You will find the hot ones. You may learn some from these infrared pics. (http://www.killroys1.bigstep.com/generic.html?pid=7)
You should be aware that the Southbridge is what reports the motherboard temps. First it does not run that hot. Second, cool it and you will have deceptively low motherboard temps.

What exactly is the motherboard temp? Is it an average of all the components on the board? I think it's just the southbridge and given the importance of it, it is really meant for it to report its own temp -not really any deception here. I think it is just a what cookedcomp has said: it's the sensitivity of the southbridge. It may not be able to tolerate as high a temp as your CPU and every bit of cooling helps even if it doesn't run that hot.
