View Full Version : 9800Pro OC question
Ok, I used atitool to get my max CPU and memory. Now what? Should I try running at the max cpu of 414/325? Do you sacrifice memory speed for GPU, or vice-versa, or max of both without artifacts (401/362)? Is it safe to run it at these speeds?

It's safe to run at any speed as long as there is no artifacting, though I usually give myself about 10MHz of "headroom" on both the GPU and memory clocks.

One school of thought suggets finding the max memory speed first, then with that max clock set, find the max core speed.
I never run my cards at the 'brink' of artifacting. I don't have any proof, but I'd speculate running it like that would lower the life of it significantly. Do what Radar suggests and lower it a little from the max.

Yup. Max out the memory first, because that has a larger impact on performance, generally speaking. Once you achieve your max mem overclock, back it down a couple MHz, maybe 3 to 5. That'll make sure your memory isn't causing artifacts, which would make ATiTool keep lowering your GPU speed, thinking that the GPU speed was causing artifacts. Then with that memory clock set, find the max GPU speed. And there ya go. With the max GPU speed you bring the memory back up a couple points to see if it artifacts and if lowering the memory was necessary.
I don't see a problem running at the 'brink' of artifacting, personally. I don't think such a thing exists - it either does or it doesn't. Just make sure it's running with absolutely NO artifacts and you're fine.
Thanks guys, I went back and set max memory and backed off alittle, and then reran max GPU, and came back with 415/361, and I got a 3DMark03 of 6337!
I can't wait to watercool this badboy
