Hello everyone,
I'll start with my specs
BH6 rev. 1.0 (SS bios)
Intel Celeron 2 566
512MB CAS2 PC-133 micron RAM
Hercules 3D prophet 4500
Fujitsu 40GB ata/100
Cooler: titan majesty (looks the same as G-ORB.. Well I think it's identical to G-ORB.. )
And my problem is the following:
I O/Ced my CPU to 850MHz. I've set my voltage to 1.75V, everything looks cool and stable. Until I load up a 3D game and run it for a while OR try 3Dmark.
OK, I said, if It's not the heat, it's voltage. I raised it to 1.9V and it was still the same.
I downloaded BURNP6.exe burner and ran it with runprio to get maximum priority. I was running it for almost 20 minutes with NO ERROS. Now WTF?! CPU is completely stable and even when I rip some movies with virtualdub (encode them to divx using max priority) for like 5 hours, it works perfectly! No overheat.
BUT when I load up 3dmark it exits abnormally to desktop. WTF?!
I play MC2 for 2 hours and it resets all by itself. WTF?!?!?!
I doesn't make any sense. I tried changing ram latencies to 3, I/O recovery to max, disabling L2 cache, changing CPU/AGP clock to 2/3, etc. NO FRIGGIN EFFECT!
I need some advice what to do here, as I don't have ANY idea.
Maybe someone will be willing to catch my pc when I toss it off the roof :D
Thanks for any help

Well you just named everything I was gonna suggest.
Your positive heat isn't an issue?
And your positive the video card is working 100%. Cause it sounds like the vid card may be the problem.
I'd love to help ya but i duuno

Ah yea and if its a gorb I'd suggest changing it cause they stink

Heat and the video card are the likeliest candidates. You might also try a smaller stick of ram if you have one. (I don't know if that 512 is one stick or more than one.) Sometimes changing the ram slot works...go figure.
What are the temps?
I had the same problem with my celly! My GTS did not want to go beyond 105 FSB in any 3D app no matter what. I ran it like that for a month, then I got the urge to boost the FSB again.
Now my system works perfectly! My vid card just needed some break-in time, I guess.
Also BH6 boards are kind of old, I hear all the time they weren't designed to work past 800mhz. The mobo may just not like that high speed.

Well I think I've got an unstable AGP bus. I tried disabling sideband, setting aperture to 4MB and setting transfer to 1×, but it doesn't really help.
Any ideas?

Oh and did I mention it works ok @ 83 FSB?
I also tried changing FSB to 103 and its all the same. Burnp6 can work forever, but 3dmark or something similar will crash...

Probably you need to replace the Cooler of the Vid card,
try to touch its back during work and taste how much is hot.
I've a similar probs (HOT!) on my Asus V3800 TNT2: all system works rock stable with all kind of prg, but when I reboot I got a 'nice' black screen, and I need to reboot many times before it initialize right!
I've checked all the other way, and I'm sure that this is the prob, and now I'm looking for a new cooler for my Gpu.
I hope it helps you :-)

Well, the back of the card is warm, but not hot. I've got sinks on the core and on RAM and a 8×8 cooler blowing into the card.. I tried underclocking it all the way, but it's the same.

Oh and I can't tell you much about the temps.. I've got a sensor on BH6, but I'm not sure where it is.. Anyway my sys temp is 28-32 degrees C.
The Doors
08-07-01, 11:39 AM
Excuse me, but what are your system temps?
during 3d games the temps of the cpu are very HOT, on my system more of 1-2 degree C than the Folding@home that works 24/7.

As I said, the sensor on my board shows about 28 degrees C when I power it up and goes up to 32 degrees C when it's working hard. But not over 32 degrees.

Ooops, we have posted togheter :-)
You can use MBM to monitor your temps using LM79 sensor, you found at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

Alright, I've downloaded the MBM.
Let's see:
http://sentry1.hypermart.net/images/temps.jpg
I've set sensor 1 to monitor LM79.

Here are my temps right after 15 minutes of BURNP6.

*Edited
I think that sensor 1 is referred to the Mobo temps, (on the North Bridge) and not to the Cpu.
Look on the Mbm website for your Mobo, you can found that there's not the sensor for the Cpu on it, so it's needed the external sensor (preferrable installed between the chip and the heat sink) that reports the temp trought the Case sensor LM79.
Note: use the sensor without the metal support!

As said B4 it seems like your AGP is out too high. Something that worked for me was to disable 2x 4x and set apature to 128 meg.
Very stable now.

This is going to everyone asking about temps: HEAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM HERE!
OK I tried disabling sideband, setting AGP to 1× and changing aperture a bit, but it wont help. I'm completely clueless.

I don't think heat is the prob since the only time there is a prob is during 3d apps. Do you have access to another vid card? I am still thinking you are pushing the agp too high.
Silver arrow
08-07-01, 04:05 PM
Well yeah, but I don't think FSB 100 is too much for AGP?? If I use 2/3 thats 66.7, right? Then it *should* work.
I'll get a PCI card (ATI 4MB yeeeeehawwww) tommorow to test it out.

This is true....
Did you use SiSioft to verify that?
Silver arrow

Here is what sandra has to say about my AGP bus:
Version............................... 1.0
Bus Speed.......................... 67 MHz
Current Data-Tranfer rate.. 2×(134 MHz)
Sideband enabled.............. Yes
Fast-Writes enabled........... No
Aperture size...................... 64MB
The Doors

It's all absolutly right!

This "should" not be a problem.
I would still try the other card. Might be a defective card.....
Silver arrow
08-07-01, 04:28 PM
Yeah, I'll put the ATI 4MB in tommorow morning. I hope that'll help getting these "misterious errors" solved :)
thanks for your help this far though..

Your welcome.
Good luck, I will watch for your follow up

Well my progress == 0.
I installed the ATI and I could not run 3dmark2k, I downloaded 3dmark99max, but it won't install under w2k. So the only thing I managed to get working was unreal, which worked ok (cept 5fps).
But Unreal did not crash with my kyro2, I think I would have to be running it for hours.. or more.
The only thing that shows if its working after 10 min is 3dmark.
So I'll try to get a GF1 DDR and test it. That way I'll find out what the problem is... My AGP bus or my 3D card.

I have been looking over this thread a little.
Does this happen whan you have you speed set to 800 or less?
Have you tried the latest Bios? If so maybe reflash.
Have you tried a diff mem stick?
Be looking to see you update....
Good luck
Silver arrow

I have the latest bios (SS) and I tried reflashing. The trick with ram wont do much.
If I set my FSB to 83 (=707MHz) it will work fine...
I'll try reflashing the bios again and I'll play a bit with the rams...

The only reason I thought about the Ram is I have had a bad stick of ram b4. Would barely run @ 100 FSB. I also had to change slots b4 and had that work.

Re-flashing has no effect, switching ram has no effect as well.
I'll try to get a geforce in the next few days to test it and I've also sent a mail to abit techsupport if they have any idea...
It's all so weird

Finally some good news.
I got a GF1 pro and my system is now rock stable @ 876MHz, 1.8v. So the only problem was my 3D card.
My thanks to everyone who helped me.

Very Cool......
I also had the problem of running my BH6 on 133 fsb.
The comp will start-up and everything but when I play Half-Life or run Sandra a blue screen with a vxd error pops up or it goes back to desktop.
After perusing the internet, I came across a solution to the problem in one of the gaming forums.
Run your msconfig and from the "General" tab hit advanced.
Check "Limit Memory to" and set it to 512 MB.
Don't ask me the technical stuff on how this would help since I just scrolled through the post, but since doing that, the system has been running rock solid. Played Half-Life CounterStrike for hours at a time - with my wife getting ****ed at me since I play form 10PM to about 3AM - and never had any problem since.
My specs:
BH6 rev 1.0 (ss bios)
Intel P3 600E - culled from an old Compaq computer o/c to 804 @ 133fsb - board reads it as a P3 800EB
Voltage set @ 1.70
Radio Shack heatsink and fan
384 RAM PC-100 CAS 2 Best Buy bargain bin
WD 14G
Visiontek GEForce2 mx 400 64mb
LutaWicasa

Hey arrow, with the new vid card I was kinda wonderin'.....in MbM what does the 3.3v read ??

s.a. Try underclocking the video card. Shutting down after a long run usually means heat. You might also try a larger case, blowhole or some of the other tricks to get heat out of the case. I will bet if you gauge the temp inside the case with games running over time it gets pretty hot in there. Also what is your ambient temp. Get the room very cold and see if that increases the time before shut down. Then do the opposite. Document your times and make a comparison. This will tell you whether heat is the problem without spending any money to troubleshoot. You can also take the sides off your case as one of the time checks.
