Any one know what rating potentiometer would be best to use with two YS-Tech 120mm fans and a 60mm delta, I would like to slow then down when my system is not under load. They are very noisy at the moment. Excellent coolers though!! :p
all i did was for my YS Tech i set it at 7V and it cools very well with just a little loud hummmmmmmmmmmm

i'm looking for something that I can use to decrease the fan speed/noise for during the winter and at night, but still be able to crank them upto full speed for when it gets hotter in the room. Looking for someway of mounting it on a blank drive bay cover.
wire a switch that is dual pole that sould switch the current from 12V to 5v or whatever. thats what i am going to do

Jimbo, the problem i heard with just setting it at 7V (this is what i do myself btw) is that all fans dont start up reliably at 7v, rather they start up reliably at 9V, if you have a good PS then it is my understanding that 7V shouldnt be a problem.
Now onto the question at hand, what is a good way to quiet the fans when the airflow is not needed? Rheostats, ive been reading up on rheostats the last couple of days and they're just the bee's knees. After a simple wiring job you mount them whereever you please (front panal 5 1/4 seems to be a popular choice) then with the turn of a knob the fan speed is controled. heres an article, or how to i dont know.

I personally wire a 3 post switch so it switches between 12/7V, that was i can start it at 12V then when im playing cs switch it to 7V. Pretty cool trick Shadow showed me. But If i were to do it again i'd do rheostats.

thanks i'll try that
I use an LM317 voltage regulator for each of the four YS Tech monsters in my case.
Rheostats rock. That's what I use and it works great. You'll need to determine the Wattage of your fans to know what size rheo you'll need. My 120mm Sunon put out like 6.8watts. I went with a 3 watt rheo and have had no problems. The knob gets a little warm to the touch when cranked all the way down, but I rarely lower it past the half way mark. It seems that full speed and half way make absolutely no difference in temp.
