View Full Version : LG 4082.. what can you tell me ?
Well, im looking to get myself a DVD burner, and ive been looking at the LG 4082 because it is one of the cheapest in $$$, it supports all formats, and especially because it burns -R at 8x.
Ok, so now what I am wondering is what can you tell me about it? Will this DVD burner beable to burn dual layer DVD disks with a firmware upgrade or not? And also, how is LG's reputation in the DVD market? Is it reliable? or should i spend more money on a different -R 8x burner?

For starters, no single layer DVD writer will turn into a dual layer w/ a f/w flash.
2nd, for in depth reviews on the drive check here (http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=219) and here (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=LG+GSA%2D4081A&Series=0). The unit reviewed does 4x DVD-R though.
For $99, I'd suggest getting the NEC (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/134) 2500A or Lite-On (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/135) 811S/851S/812S. For the time being, getting a over priced Plextor unit is not recommended as 16x single layer and dual layer are coming out soon.
I second the Lite-On recommendation. I've seen these for as low as $US86 and if their DRW-RW drives are anything like their CD-RW drives (bulletproof) they're the best value on the market at this time.
I have one. The drive is a HLDS design manufactured by LG and is very solid. The only recommendation that I'd make is to have a fast CDROM, CDRW, or DVD for general data reading and perhaps CD burning, as the CD burning seems a bit slow on this one. Overall, it's a good drive.

actually, a few companys have said that thier 8x single layer burners will be able to support dual layer w/ a firmware upgrade, however, they also said that +rw drive would do +r with a firmware upgrade and many drives advertising it couldnt. its entirley possible that they are saying this just to keep people buying burners now and then they can hit us again for dual layer bunrners later.
all that being said, i like my lite-on 4x +/- so far
Hey, thanks for all the replies.
After a Long and strenuous time debating which dvd rewritter to get, i decided to pick up the Liteon 812s for its 8x +/- burning. The reason i didnt pick up the LG 4082B was because i would have had to wait another week to get it.. and i was kinda in a rush.. so lets hope this drive performans well. And also, i hope that its not too loud....
