I am looking for a cheap ATI or Nvidia card to put in my friends comp I am building him. It needs to be AGP (duh) and needs to be able to play things like Halo, AAO, Call Of Duty in OK quality and 800x600 or 1024x768 res. The key is that I need to keep it as cheap as I can, and about the best thing I saw for his little computer was this...

Whatever it is I will be able to overclock it as far as I can get it.

Any different suggestions or is what I found good?

EDIT - Also my friend said that the card that I pointed out woulden't like Halo because halo needed T&L, so???? I know lots of people have GF4 MX's that play Halo and stuff.

look for something else, cause an mx440 wont play halo at anything higher then lowest settings at 640X480.

I would say the best deal for new cards this side of $100 is probably the FX5600, however it's not very far this side, and for 20-30 more you can get a 9500 or 9600 (non-SE) Otherwise in the $60 area, look for a 9100, 8500 or GF4200/4400. You could get lucky on a used 9500 or 9600 for $80ish. However if you really must only spend around $45 then this at least beats a GF4MX...

But it's only commendable on that score because it's this side of $50 "ya gets what ya pays for" applies.

An ATI 8500 is a decent deal, but the Ti4200 / Ti4400 is the breadwinner in this price bracket. You should be able to nose around and find one for $75 or less...

Get a refurbished one from newegg. So much cheaper!!! If it doesn't work you can still send it back.

Humm, well it looks like either the new (I hate refurbs) FX5600 for $90
http://www.cmicomputer.com/cgi-bin/quikstore.cgi?product=vcpw128fx56&detail=yes

Or the new TI4200 for $101
http://www.cmicomputer.com/cgi-bin/quikstore.cgi?product=PWVC128TI428X&detail=yes

Which one?

(That site has the best reseller rateings out of all of the cheap listings on pricewatch, that is why both cards I mention are from there)

O and I know an mx440 can play Halo because I can play Halo on my GF2mx440 (overclocked) at 1024x768 maxed settings, but it does look crappy ;), yet playable.

$101 is a ripoff for a ti4200, you might as well get a 9800 pro for $210 on newegg if you cant get a ti4200 for less than $70. do not get the fx5600 or 9600, its much slower than a ti4200! try ebay for a good ti4200

if he wants new, get him a 9800 pro before they are all gone or prices go up. theres not many new ti4200s left and those arent worth $100+ at this point.

Your friend cant be picky. Like oc550 said, either ti4200 or r9800p nothing in between(unless you can score a good price on a refurbed 5900xt)
